This is annoying me, not because it directly affects me because it doesn't, indirectly yes it does but...

https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/9181974.Opposition_try_to_force_re_think_over_sale_of_Union_Terrace_car_park/

Now, there's been a nearly 20,000 strong petition put together to stop the sale of a car-park so the Uni can't buy it.

Local ruling party decides they want to sell anyway (if they haven't already) so when 'we' decide we wana keep our car-park they bring out 5 alternative options, NONE of which acknowledge that we dont want the Uni to get the car park.

All these options forced down our throats result in land being sold, not what york's residents want.

My question is, since we have clearly voiced we want the land and they haven't listened what can be done? I emailed politicians involved with ideas for a different strategy but got ignored... I wouldn't mind ideas for 'teaching them' not to fuck over their voters....

This:
https://stevegalloway.mycouncillor.org.uk/files/2011/08/Steve-Galloway-Union-Terrace-statement-page-2.jpg
explains (in my mind) how so far it's somewhat somescreened but it is biased, being an opposing party.

I don't like the idea they can make a decision and go through with it when everyone thaty actually matters says the opposite.

Can anything be done?

Similar thing going on at Malton with Wentworth carpark.
https://www.savewentworthstreetcarpark.co.uk/
They want yet another supermarket, or rather they want 2 million for the land and don't care that there will then be such a lack of parking that the town centre will be finished.
The sting is that carpark is only not built on already because it tends to flood in heavy rain - being in a hollow - conveniently overlooked when it suits.

Whats the point in expanding the Uni anyway? It's hardly an economical option for almost any course anymore. The Unis should be downsizing!

Don't know what deals are done to favour people in certain positions..

This carpark being shut would be a big deal for York though, I'd like to see the guy face-to-face and have a chat. Smile Smile

It always makes me laugh when a socialist ''party of the people'' elite leadership choose to ignore the will of the people. Libel laws prevent me from claiming that they are probably on the take but nothing can prevent me from thinking it.

Run for office yourself. That's how a representative system works.

Which is only a realistic option for those that can afford to fight an election, either by following the party line and getting their backing, or by having a significant amount of wealth and spare time for funding your own election.

Vote for someone else. That's the way our (and most modern) democracy's work. You choose people to represent you who you trust to do the best for you.
Just because people "want" something, it does not mean it's overall best for the community or even best for them.
20,000 people is approximately 10% of the population of York. What do the other 90% think?

Personally I think the fact that so many politicians DO take heed of public opinion when they believe they SHOULD be doing differently is an excellent explanation for many the ways the country manages to mess up.
Have a look at what people WANT to read, believe and ingest in tabloid papers and you'll see exactly why 'people power' is often a force for stupidity.

They haven't bothered to input.

This isn't something that's been a quiet issue, it's had 3 or 4 different runs through the paper, quite a cafuffle. But, it's as if the land was sold now they're trying to sweep it under the rug.

I'm emailing Ed Miliband about what a crap rep he has here, the guy last month needed a sub on his wages and now sell's off land without public consultation? Some management skills he has. Rolling Eyes

So only 10% are really that bothered; actually a fair bit less, I suspect, because I'd be willing to bet a lot of those worried by the closure of a car park don't even live in the area.

Sounds like they are well aware that the a minority of people care about this enough to to sign a petition - and an even smaller number to write some letters, etc, we would presume.

Have you suggested an alternative way to raise £2m or whatever they are getting?

Personally, I don't actually like the selling off/privatisation of public capital. Though, too a university, I would have less qualms.

But I think your arguments are all 'wrong' regardless and a symbol of why they CAN 'get away with it' maybe, too. If they only make policy because there's enough people shouting, not because they think it's the right thing to do - then they will happily do the wrong thing if there's an insignificant amount of people moaning.

Other site's have been suggested and ignored.

They only expanded within the last 5years? They want to bring more students into the area despite that Uni's rankings deacreasing last year (by like 20 places) and there already being enough students in the area to prevent people needing work getting it. Long and short is; they do not need the space.. it's maybe because they know they can buy it for £2mil, lease it back for a year, save it for a year then sell for £4.5mil.

As a business deal it's sound, solid investment. As a Uni buying it under the platform it's for "expansion", nothing supports it.

That 1 150-odd space plot cannot have 20,000 random people using it per month; yet that amount signed to save it. These are the people that care about the wider community and do not want a politician appointed and paid to serve the people doing what he likes to serve his own agenda. You imply it may have been done to make people whine; why?

Part of the procedure of the selling of public portfolio land is putting it out on the open market to test it's 'value', this includes public/developmentary surverys and noting of investment/planning enquiries. All this HAS to be done, according to council procedure before the consideration of a tabled offer - - but it wasn't.

Serving the people to ensure their interests are best served and doing what they want are often different things.
The point about the people using it is a good one - the Tony Moto motocross site received objections from a lot of people that seemingly had no reason to have ever been bothered by the site. Seems it was a 'friends and family' hate campaign against it.

My point was actually (not realising it was only 150 places) was that local people probably don't need the car park - it's people in other areas that need the car park, but expect the locals to support it.

I didn't intend to imply it was done to make people whine.

Well, the only ways to change that system are:

1) From the inside.
2) Insurrection.

Apathy isn't going to get the job done.

Yes, the other site's are public too, one is Nearby Bootham Park Hospital (literaly, the place next door), several block's have been derelict for years and are doing nothing.

Since they've been stood for years, apparently not.

But, we have a result! (yeeey!)

The Uni backed out.. Wink - the local public won something.

Eh?

I don't follow? Elvington has quite a reputed base for it's activities and the local residents are aware of it, also that it can't be stopped overnight.

Similar 'people power' thing - and it's worked well enough that I believe you've not been allowed to do the 2-mile flyers it was famous for, for some time.
