The instructor could be talking mince; he may be correct but only for his local force; and even if he's right and all forces train that way then it's still not necessarily the best way to do it.
If you think the instructor is wrong, tell him to shut it. He's your employee, don't let him get uppity. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Like badge as said the safety position is right foot over covering your back brake, it gives you more control over the bike if someone was to back end you. With left foot down, reason being you should be in first ideally to get the fastest start when the lights change or you can move again.
Even if you were parked up and got on your bike I was told you should always get in the previous footing after getting it started and going in to first.
However what I would do if this is just for das and you will definitely get this instructor covering your mod is follow his lead until he passes you then, go to the other method (if you are having problems explaining it to him). The safety position is always best imo as you have more control and it is faster to move when you have stopped. ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS

Again, I was always taught right foot on brake, clutch in ready to go...this is what I do. Unless I'm at a four way control or something where I know I'm going to be waiting, in which case it's both feet down and stretch. ____________________ Willson - "If you go out on that CBR600 in the winter, you're going to do more miles on your side than on your wheels."

On my low powered bike i tend to use the rear brake on hill starts probably as it needs more wrist movement to pull away. Means my throttle position is better.
Same if i'm taking a pillion, it can make for a more stable take-off.
When i'm solo it depends on how steep the hill is as to whether i use the rear.
Works for me....and for Nigel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9M83O2mpEk ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud
