Money for old rope?

I have neglected my GS500(2003) for a while and when it had its MOT a couple of months ago it got a few minors. I am looking at getting a new bike and have been for a few months but as always things get in the way, this time its a rather costly honeymoon. Basically the front tyre is nearly gone and the rear has a nail in it (and not too much tread). It needs new front disc and new front and rear pads.

Looking at the disc it seems that I can get anything from a second hand one from the breakers for £50 or a ECB one for £160. The pads are cheap so no worries there. Tyres are looking like they will be about £90 -£100 each.

Is it worth be spending £400 on this? Its not in the best nick as it lives out side and the weather has given it some pitting. I think I could replace the discs and pads myself (although I have never done so before) but I will get the tyres fitted. The bike in general has done me OK apart from some problems with the battery keeping charge.


So I guess my questions are.....

Is it worth trying to save the money on the disc with a second hand one?
Are the cheaper wavy discs available on ebay not going to kill me?
Where around London can I get some cheap tyres?
Am I likely to get a discount if I just get it all done at a garage?/ Has anyone had similar work done if so how much?

Blimey, those tyres sound expensive If you go for a used disc, at least run a steel rule over its surface to make sure it's not badly warped and measure the thickness to make sure it's nowhere near the wear limit too. I can't say that I'm keen on wavy discs. I know for a fact that some are of very dubious quality, same with EBC discs.

If you try and sell it in that state all the buyer is going to do is knock off the cost of the bits from a reasonable selling price.


I would expect a pair of BT45s or similar fitted to be around £190, less if you are willing to buy tyres online and take the wheels to a tyre place (normally costs approx £10 to fit a tyre to a loose wheel). Might be able to find part worn tyres if it is just to get it roadworthy and sold.

Get a used front disc, if it is warped send it back and try a different one. Fit it yourself, it isn't hard.

if i was looking at buying another gs and i went and saw yours and it had a fuct disc, tyres , pads etc,
do you think i'd just knock off the price to fix, like fuck,
to me it would look like you hadn't given a shit about the bike at all, and probably had loads more wrong with it,
