no key for the fuel cap ???? what next ????

hi just found my frist real problem with my project im asking for some wisdom on the removal of the said fuel cap
my head tells me to smash a screw driver in and turn unless you peeps know of another way

Is it not the ignition key? If possible then use a load of penetrating oil on the lock just to check it hasn't seized up.

Decent locksmith could cut a key to match the lock but that might cost more than a new cap.

could drill all of the barrel out so no key springs/pins remain and then there should be either a plate in the bottom which you turn or the locking pins(that sit under the lip of the tank) should come back where youve drilled out the barrel

if you try the screwdrier route and snap it then it makes drilling alot harder, the barrels are only alloy, screwdrivers tend to be tougher, plus the drill bit will hit the broken shaft and spin off

Hi

Use a proper penetrating oil. WD40 isn't that much use for it.

Entirely possible someone has swapped the ignition or fuel cap already, hence a non matching lock.

A pattern fuel cap is probably not a massive amount, although likely not as good quality.

If you are very lucky then there will be a number on the cap which you can use to get a key cut. Also possibly worth checking the helmet holder lock / seat lock as well.

and to reduce chance of the drill bit slipping of wearing out always keep the are you are drilling oiled

Be careful about drilling it. Because its gonna empty filings into your tank so empty it out once you have it open. Otherwise it will clog up your fuel filter and potentially get in t'engine.

How much is a tank off ebay? You may find its cheaper doing that than buying a new fuel cap. A mate found that out after he fitted a new cap on

ebay is always a option but how many people sell a petrol tank with the fuel cap and key?

most sellers sell the lockset as a whole item ignition, fuel cap etc
