Oooo now I can help you here...

I have both a cafetiere and an Expresso Machine. In the 4 years i've tried practically every strength 4 and 5 coffee in it. Sainsbury's Continental is one of the best. It's in a lilac packet and comes either ground or in bean form. There's also 2 sizes.

If you're feeling flush, Illy is nice. It comes in a tin and costs around £7. It may be cheaper in Asda, it is on their website. Also Tim Horton's from Canada is nice but at £35+Postage for a kilo of the stuff, it's expensive.

Other brands you will probably like:

Taylors Italian Blend.
Spar's own Italian Blend (I think). It is in a black packet.
Most of the Lavazza range.
Douwe Egberts

Basically most of the stronger ones are nice. Some are quite bitter but if you like stronger, sweet and mellow coffee, the above should be ok. If your cafetiere came without a spoon, use a heaped cerial spoon. Put too much in, it erupts out of the cafetiere...

^^This.

On the erupting cafetiere front, i remmember many years ago having lunch in the cafe at Binns in Darlo with my Mum and Granny.
An old boy in the queue in front of us ordered coffee and it came in a cafetiere, he'd obviously not encountered one before and looked at it quizzically.
He then pushed the plunger down with both hands, like it was the plunger on an explosives detonator:

https://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/169/169,1249969309,4/stock-vector-dynamite-cartridges-and-detonator-35071588.jpg

The jet of coffee that shot out of the cafetiere almost hit the ceiling. Ever since then i always give myself a little countdown before i press it down on mine.

Go to a proper shop and get beans, then grind 'em yourself using a hand grinder for a consistent, even grind.

Varieties I like:

Mandheling Sumatra
Ethiopian Harar
Sulawesi Toraja Kalossi

All Arabicas and

Timor Arabusta

As the name suggests a Robusta/Arabica mix.

If you're anywhere near Birmingham for the German Christmas Market, there's a "Coffee Man" stall that sells fresh ground flavoured coffee, usually around £3 a bag which gives you enough for 3 Cafatieres full..

The coffee itself is pretty good but the flavouring oils are excellent, particularly Amaretto, Cherry or Irish Very Happy

This man is correct. The same could be said for going black.

Pour ground coffee into mug, fill with boiling water and after 30 seconds stir and the grounds will sink. Perfect coffee.

We use Asda's Columbian Arabica beans, think my mum was buying something else before, but I never look at the packet.

Also, I have been making my coffee less and less milky and really liking it. So I decided to try having it black, don't think I will be going back!

No milk, no sugar. FFS you are drinking coffee, why spoil it with contaminants?

Have been cutting back on the sugar too, but I had a black one without any and it was too bitter for my taste. About half a teaspoon is right.

I tend to get the Asda fairtrade beans and grind them at home with my Barista grinder... about 3 or 4 varieties of beans (and ready ground) to choose from, depending on your palate - they have strength indications on them too which helps.

You could also try one of the Starbucks own brands, but in my experience, they tend to be quite bitter, and not always a consistent strength...

As mentioned earlier, the Illy brand is one of the best I've tried so far too Thumbs Up

I use brown sugar, but only as a treat, as i don't want to consume 2 bags of sugar a week, so i have to settle for sweeteners. Rolling Eyes

I use all of the above, and have kept a tin that I use for fresh coffee. Quite often I buy a new packet before I have run out, and will top it up with the new coffee, which makes a nice blend.

I rarely buy cheap cafetiere coffee, it seems pointless. But I will say Douwe Egberts and Taylors can often be bought in freeze dry packs in the 99p or Poundland shops.

Top tip: keep all cafetiere coffee in a tin in the fridge. It keeps better and fresher for longer. Thumbs Up

Seeing as this is a coffee snob thread; you do realise that you may as well put your beans in a blender? Blade grinders aren't. They don't grind, they just smash the beans to pieces. You have no control over how course the grind is. What you really want is a burr grinder.
You may think it's not all that important but, alas, it is. If you use a drip filter then it doesn't really matter, but move to a french press or a moka pot and you'll want to change how course the grind is.
As an example; too fine a grind in a press and you'll end up with lots of residue in your cup and a bitter taste, you really want larger particles so they are trapped in the mesh.

Wow, so putting stuff in the fridge helps keep it fresher for longer? Whoever would've thought it?
