I have a 1985 yamaha 700 maxim i wanted to know if i can put straight pipes on it and {1} do i need to do anything with carbs. if I do and how hard would it be to do so. any information would be super. thanks

Hi there, first of all welcome to the forum, by straight pipes i take it that you mean straight through chopper/cruiser style exhausts?

If so then the answer is yes, theres a woman lives local to me with a 650 maxim and she has some lovely sounding straight through exhausts on it

However the only problem would be that maxim's are american imports as far as im aware and where never sold inn this country as a model so not sure of avalibility of aftermarket parts and the like

The legal decibel restriction applies to bikes registered after 1983. So you may get problems at MOT time. If the pipes are straight through the carbs would most likely require some work. Fit them run the engine then check your plugs and work from there. You may be able to get them running right without rejetting by altering the fuel air mixture.
