Have been recommended to use a baby monitor to enable me to hear if i have any late-night unwanted visitors in my garage (that doesn't have mains power). It's about 20m+ from the house, and few a through brick walls. And as i'm wanting to get nicer bikes and don't want to become a theft statistic, i'm beginning to think it's now time to "get around to it".

Don't want to buy a baby monitor that's not going to be up to the job, so i can't just buy anything going on eBay unless i risk wasting the money (have been reading a few handful reviews moaning about things that would make the products useless to me - e.g. incredibly short battery life, very poor signal/range and hissing interference, etc.)

So was hoping for some recommendations for what will work well, as i don't want to waste money going through a load of cheaper baby monitors, nor am i after SupaBabyMonitor3000, at £££££££, with a load of unnecessary and otherwise useless features.

If you look around you can get battery powered alarm systems for around £30,00 , there is also these on ebay:

Do you have any friends who've had kids ?

They'll have baby monitors in the attic to try.

A baby alarm is assuming they will make enough noise to trigger one, where as a general alarm will go off on detecting motion or the opening of a door or window. Just think you would be better of with a proper alarm system.

Already got an alarm (just a basic standalone unit). Combine with baby monitor = win. Can't hear it from the house though (so no real point without baby monitor to bring the noise into the house).

And although this is probably the only time in my life i'm ever going to say so, i think covdude may be right Laughing

And no, no friends with kids (like your thinking though!)

If you be obsessed with security mate, i'm right behind you ! waiting for a decent link to a baby monitor, for when the winter comes and i've only got the window air slit to hear through, and a heavy sleeper 2, as are my dogs !!

My newish neighbours alco friends are front line rioter chav scum, and two doors down are some more chavs who have been done time and time again for burglary, i suspect they robbed my mates pushbike from my garden. Evil or Very Mad Thumbs Up Karma

Shameless bump. I can't be the only person in the world with a detached garage that doesn't want to spend megabucks on getting a fancy overpriced wireless alarm system? (unless of course there's a cheap way, i'm all ears Laughing )

When I had a young baby I would sometimes hear him crying, go upstairs and he would be sound asleep. I realised I must have been picking up a neighbour's baby alarm signal, so they must be able to transmit a fair distance in the right conditions.

After a few months without sleep (ask any parent who had a noisy baby, you go a little mental) I got sick of this happening, so the mean streak in me caused me to go the transmitting half of the pair and make loud choking noises into it on a regular basis.

I hope the other parents were legging it up and down the stairs like I had.

Surely the best way is to attach a plastic or Styrofoam cup to each end of a long piece of string and tie it up keeping it tight between the house and garage...! Wink

There's little point running a lead from the house, as the use of a lock or two has already deterred the chav opportunists. So all that'll happen is the crooks that want to steal 3/4 bikes (i want to/will have) at once... they'll hop over the wall, cut the power lead, disappear for a while if necessary, and come back when the security's all down / i've given up replacing the wire. Hence why i want something that doesn't require mains electricity to work, as it's too exposed to being disabled with ease as the garage is detached from the house, at the bottom of the garden (and opens out onto the street).

Get a cordless door bell. Swap the button to ring when the push button is out. Stick it under side stand at night and sleep with the ringer.

How much is it for a bike alarm with a remote? I remember my mate back in the late 80's early 90's having one fitted to his car that also had a keyfob with a buzzer that relayed the alarm alert from the car to the fob.Surely there's something that sends a message/call to your mobile phone?

I'll be keeping my bike (once I get it) in a friends garage that's in the next street to my place. The garage is right across the street from my front room and I was thinking of fitting a CCTV camera to my living room windowsill, aimed at the garage door and connect it to record on my PC overnight.Won't deter them but if anything does happen hopefully they'll be on candid camera Very Happy
