What a total idiot. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...
From September 2014 to January/February 2015 I will not be using any English, nor reading any. As such, I won't be on here. PM at will, but I won't be checking/posting unless in emergencies. Certainly not for the first couple of months. Please berate me savagely if I break that rule... |

Gotta love those crazy Koreans!
I spent some time in S.Korea in the company of a Korean Ki-Gong (internal energy) expert. His party piece was using one finger to (effortlessly) bend a chopstick on his throat.
For those of you who don't know, standard Korean chopsticks are flat and made of stainless steel. It took me a lot of effort to bend it straight again using both hands.

lol, I love the way they introduce the molten lead! That and the cheesy music makes it feel like a bad cop show ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10

Personally, i reckon 99.9% of Ki/Chi 'powers' are nothing more than parlour tricks, but there is just that odd 0.01% that really can't be explained.

They're all parlour tricks
I can use an iron girder as a punch bag. Does that make me magic? No, it's just conditioning.
The molten lead 'trick' is pretty easy really, cold spoon and cold water in his mouth. Vaguely ballsy to try it, granted. Does it make him a wizard, or even more preposterously, a god at martial arts? Fuck no.
Hence my 'what a muppet' (that you saw fit to disagree with). Just because you buy into this shit, doesn't make it worthy of anyone else's respect.
I detest any of this board breaking idiocy, especially that yank muppet who does vast quantities of them. He has a conditioned hard patch on the bottom of his hand, and the boards are specially cut. Woooooooooooooo.... WIZARD!!!
I do, however, want some of those metal chopsticks. Only bamboo or plastic here really ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

As i said, 99.9% are just 'tricks' - hence i don't buy into them, i do find them pretty cool though. I just find that tiny percentage that can't be explained as amazing. For example, the chap in the video i linked lighting up LEDs - i can't find an explanation for that, can you?
Likewise, the Korean guy i met who bent the chopstick, i couldn't find a good explanation for that, can you?
As for board breaking, anyone who cuts the boards is a faker, what's the point in that? There's no magic to board breaking, it's mostly all just technique and determination - which is exactly why it's practised in many of the Korean arts. I've put my foot through 3 x inch thick pine boards (not spaced), no magic there. I've seen a TKD Master put his foot through 6 x 1 inch boards (not spaced), again no magic there, and they definitely weren't cut because i supplied them for the seminar we'd asked him to teach. It's basic physics, irresistible force meeting immovable object - something's gotta give.
As for the chopsticks - really, you don't want them. They're fucking difficult to use compared with round ones. If it wasn't for the fact that everyone over there uses them, i would've assumed it was some fiendish yellow trick to humiliate the decadent imperialist westerners.

Granted, the LED one is harder to explain. But I'm still not going to subscribe to him being a 'master' of focusing inner energy.
That whole video reeked off spoof anyway, like those haunted house programs. If you consider it a spoof, it's not hard to imagine from that (very close and blurry) angle that they had extra electrodes coming out the back. An LED uses next to no power.
The chopstick through the table, a cafefully drilled hole preserving just the top mm.
You're not cynical enough padawan.
As for your metal chopstick thing, metal hardens when it is worked. Once you bend a teaspoon, it is damn hard to bend it back into shape. There are lots of videos of people snapping arrows with their need. Your collarbone is very strong, and a chop stick is pretty blunt (compared to most things).
As for preferring round chopsticks, I miss pointy ones. Vietnamese ones often don't taper, or just have a big bulge in the middle... But the ones in that picture look pretty sweet. Also, the Thais like to use a spoon too... over here that is considered opulent or something. So you're meant to just slobber everything down with your blunt ass imprecise chopsticks. Eating snails with them is often amusing too.
Blurgh, never mind.
As for board breaking, the grain is deliberately cut so they are perpendicular to the way they are held. If you try it with the grain running the strongest way, they won't break. Spacers just make it even easier. When I was 16 I was the only person who could punch lockers out in one go. There was no trick to that, but the lockers were just weak. Still, to most watching it, I had some kind of chi based powers
Anyway, I still love ya man. You strange ninja fetishist. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

I think you misunderstand me, i'm possibly the most cynical person i know with regard to that sort of thing - i've never subscribed to the whole internal energy thing, i'm of that boring western mindset whereby i like to see a scientific explanation for things.
But, there are a lot of things which defy explanation, that's the stuff i find amazing. As good ole Bill said "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Going back to the metal chopstick bending - it was done in an ad-hoc manner, in a restaurant with their cutlery, so no chance of it being 'doctored' (i also chose the chopstick at random). It was definitely done on his throat and not his collarbone - it was just above his larynx, i was sat across a table from him so got a good view.
It was done with one finger, and without any signs of visible physical effort (i.e. shaking of the hand etc).
Whilst not pointed, the end of the Korean chopsticks are only a couple of mm across. As science tells us, P=F/A (Pressure is equal to force divided by surface area), so there must've been a large amount of pressure applied to his cartilaginous trachea.
Anyway, standard issue Korean cutlery is (flat) metal chopsticks and a spoon, typically placed on a porcelain rest:
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3006/2436232132_7402677034.jpg
The spoon is always used for soup (soup is never drunk from the bowl like the Japs do), stews and rice dishes (bibimbap), the chopsticks are used for noodles and side dishes (Banchan) etc. You only use one at a time, so if using the spoon the chopsticks should be on the rest and vice versa. Dishes and bowls are not brought up to the mouth (like the Chinks do with their rice bowls), in fact they should not really be held at all. Generally the aim is to eat as quietly as possible, with the exception of noodles - slurping is seen as demonstrating that you are enjoying them (i was very pleased one day to be complimented on my noodle slurping technique when eating with some Japanese work colleagues in a restaurant in Brussels).
Here endeth the (brief) lesson on Korean table manners. ____________________ Space Monkey #7
