Hello.

I have a Suzuki gs500e 1989
I was out giving to good thrash down some local country lanes
Yestaday, when I came to some light I noticed the engine tapped
Louder then it normally dose and the throttle seemed a little lacking.

I no the gs's are known for the tappy engine but this noise is obsessively loud.
I thought the exhoulst sill had blown so I removed and reset it
But it made no difference.

I have a sound recording of the bike so if u won't to hir it I can upload
It someware.

The bike struggles to ideal now and is low on power. When I limped my bike home it felt like it was only running on o e sillinder.

O and when I had my exhoulst of I started the bike and the noise was just as loud with the exhoulst on.

It sounds like something is smashing something.
I'm resamly skilled with bikes so plain to fix it my self(once I no what to fix off course)
The noise sounds like the cam is smashing the rocker arm.
I was going to look at the valve cleanses, should I keep with this idea

Any help will be apprishiated.

The big end would make a knocking sound, rather than a tap. Whip the head off and check the valve clearances.

GS500's are renowned for eating the top-end. I'd check the cams and followers.

I checked the clearances and there fine. The cams and chain are all fine.

The sound is like a hammer hitting metal. It sounds like it's coming from the top half of the engine but I couldn't see anything doubt when I Had the top cover of the head of the engine.

Thanx for the suggestion. I've decided to get a new bike and keep this one for a project bike.
