After my first crash I'd like to know what you think is the second most important item of protective clothing...

I reckon my boots come a close second since they bore the brunt of my crash - see pics. If I'd been wearing trainers I hate to think what state my foot/ankle would be in.

Incidently:
Boots - f**ked
Jeans - not a think ripped/damaged
Jacket - slight scuff on the elbow
Gloves - fine, but did stave my thumb

Crash:
about 35mph
front wheel slide (think it was wet manhole cover)
came down on left and slide for a bit

Gloves I'd say, as no matter what the crash is because of and happens, it is instinctive to put your hands out first.

I'd go with gloves too.

The skin on your palms doesn't grow back in the same stretchy way if you happen to rip it all off. This is A Bad Thing.

Gloves, they're your first instinctive things to put on the ground, and you can live without legs, but without hands would be extremely difficult.

Although, its best to have all of you limbs! So wear full prtection!!!

Hi

Gloves definatly. Sure boots might well be good in many crashes, but most of the time gloves are going to be needed.

Personally I would say that gloves are quite probably more important than a crash helmet.

All the best

Having a decent jacket will keep you warm and dry, so you might not lose concentration so quickly, hence might not crash in the first place. The same goes for gloves, so your hands can react faster when the event does occur. As for falling off, my first instinct (probably) was to put out my hand, it broke my arm Rolling Eyes, but my gloves did save me from losing any skin. One thing though, I'd disagree about gloves more important than helmets, my helmet undoubtedly saved my life; I'd have flattened my head without it.

Gloves. My hands will probably be the first thing to touch down and to be honest I quite like the little things.

Ah, the old knuckle shuffle... should have thought of that!

Anyways, I think I have all angles covered although I might invest in a slightly sturdier pair of gloves - the hot summer weather has seen me wearing (very good) padded cycling gloves. Besides, I'll needs some weatherproof ones for the winter.

Another vote for gloves, ever since I fell off my Mountain Bike at 10 MPH and got a severaly bad graze on my hand I would dread to think what would happen 5 times faster. Shocked

Then I personally would say Jacket, the Torso should be just as important, make sure it has good back padding, you don't want a snapped Spinal Cord really. Wink Plus also your main organs operate in the torso area, so you don't want the unfortunate situation of falling on something sharp on the tarmac that could pierce your Heart, Lungs etc...

Statistically, there are more severe injuries suffered to the feet and legs than there are to hands,.

I always advise students to look at trousers, footwear and gloves together withthe jacket being the last bit of kit to purchase if not buying all at the same time!

I wonder if thats due in part to more people wearing decent gloves than decent boots. From the answers given here that would seem to be the case.

So does that mean I have to ride wearing a Johnny too !?? Shocked

EErrr.. Seriously though Gloves is what I voted for, not just for if you fall off. But to protect you from the elements to, riding without gloves in bad/cold weather is silly.

No, the main reason is because in many accidents, the rider goes down with the bike and gets trapped between the machine and the road surface and then slides. It is quite rare (although it does happen) for the rider to be thrown from the bike, when this happens it is usually on impact with something solid and injuries to the hands in these sitautions are normally the last of the riders worries and quite minor in comparison!

Exactly what happened to me! Hence my boots were knackered and my hands hardly touched the floor.

erm... nope, completely f**ked. I managed to smash the crank casing which unfortunately means a new engine. Mind you, I didn't break any indicators or even scratch the bike... go figure! Bloke down garage said he'd never seen anything like it!

I say jacket is next most important.
1. when i had my first crash i landed on my left shoulder and it completly severed the padding in my jacket and stil grazed my arm, (imagine if i wernt wearing a jacket)
And i was doing 30 mph. "restricted scoot"

secondly, i know a boy who died on a scooter, he was doing less than 20 mph and he didnt see the car infront had stoped, he crashed into the back of it and his handle bar went into his stomach and destroyed his insides. He lived but unfortionatly died later in hospital from enternal bleeding.

Thats why i always wear my jacket which is fully padded Front and back...

also Ive got a friend who was walking through chatham and his jacket saved him from being stabed in the chest by a stoned druggy!

Ben...

Depends on the accident really. When I came off at low speed on car park (wet) I slid along and would say jacket were most important. I know everyone says you automatically put your hands down but I don't think that is always true.

When I hit a car that pulled out infront of me my trousers were no question the most important. In most accidents I would say trousers protect you the most. If you get hit from the side, your legs get hit, if you run into something, your legs get hit. Whatever happens your legs take alot of impact.

I also say that it depends on the accident as no two accidents are the same. On mine i would say it was my trousers that were most helpful as i got trapped between the bike and floor, but also the jacket as my elbow also went down hard. I kept hold of the handlebars for some unknown reason and after i hit the tarmac and came to a halt i hit the kill switch, hands didnt touch the floor. But on my stationary drop my gloves saved my fingers as they got caught between the barend and the ground. So it depends on the person/accident/situation. I would always rather be safe than sorry and kit up, you never know when your front brakes are going to lock up on you! Embarassed
