If the engine is taking in too much air then it could cause it to cut out yes.

Fitting a K&N style filter is NOT the answer. You need to upjet quite a bit in order to fit one and you will probably experience a loss in performance along with massively increased fuel consumption.

You'd be much better obtaining a standard airbox from ebay or a breakers.

If you dont upjet it probably wont run and if it does it will either die quicker or just seize.

If your airbox is 'smashed up' then you'll be sucking in lots of road crap into your engine / intake system including water which is never good for running.

Intake systems are designed to perform at a specific volumetric value and airspeed. If you modify them then you need to change the jetting as the airflow will be different.

Fitting a chavtastic pod filter is a quick way to more problems. You'll have to upjet to compensate for the increased airflow but that will be pointless as the engine won't be able to get rid of the gasses any quicker through your standard exhaust. They are also exposed and get wet etc.

If you don't upjet then you'll run lean and blow a hole in the piston or the engine will seize Thumbs Up Just replace the standard bits and you'll be fine.
