My bike just got stolen

I just came back home and my bike was gone.

I read quickly online about reporting the theft and I saw someone mentioning he had to send BOTH keys to the insurer.

My bike was insured but when I bought it last month, I only got ONE key for it. Is this going to be a problem?

Probably not if you bought it used and never claimed to have both keys in any documents you signed when you took out the policy.

If you're particularly worried, nip out and get a key cut maybe? I assume it's so they know you didn't leave it unattended with the keys in it.

If they try any crap like that please do come back and name and shame the scumbags. Ive never been asked how many keys I have so I doubt its going to be an issue. I know how much these douche's actually wriggle when it comes down to fulfilling their side of the bargain.

If your bikes gone the last thing you need is to worry about that. get onto them ASAP and get it all started, so sorry to hear that youve been a victim of the subhumans, hope it gets sorted painlessly (for you that is, not for the theives whom I hope their next shit is a hedgehog)

Don't sweat it, that's (surely!) only if they buy the bike off of you, either as a non-recovered or a recovered but total loss. If there's any chance you could get it back, you might need the key.

That won't be necessary. Police has found a burnt down motorcycle in bushes over the river 300 yards from my address.
Its chassis serial number differed by only two digits from what I have in MOT certificate of my bike. They are still confirming that but it would be too much of a coincident if these were two different bikes.

On top of that, the burnt bike has been stolen two years ago in London.

The guy I bought it from bought it from dealership in Dundee last September.

They could do a good CSI episode about this bike.
It was a black '98 GSXF 750.

That wont stop a bike theft though, it may mean you get the bike back but in what condition? Badly damaged? With history so its worth nothing at all?

Concealing it is one thing but having a more visibly active deterrent would be better. One that suggests a tracker is fitted would cost pence and do more to stop the actual theft than 500 quids worth of concealed GPS equipment.

Im just not a fan of lots of forms of security, alarms are ignored, immobilisers are pointless on something that can be carried away and trackers just ensure that you get your soiled bike back so the insurance company can give you less money and you can get nothing for it when you sell it.

Lol, I agree totally, but what would you recommend? A huge chain and ground achor, or maybe a rottweiler chained to the bike? Smile

To the OP, if it turns out to not be the burnt out bike that was found, could you post up the details, and I'll keep watch for it if it comes up for sale in the future!

I think you've got it spot on. Both of you.
Dogs and chains > alarms, immobilisers, trackers (trackers can be more useful for TPO insured bikes).
Covers are also quite under-rated. Can't get on with a cover myself (too fiddly and time-consuming to get on/off), so i settle with the next best thing, an undesirable old hack of a bike.

That said, i do feel having some form of "noise-maker" when the bike's being messed with, has value. Limited, but value nonetheless (so just buy a cheap one that doesn't mess with the bike's electrics too much)

I also think 'tagging' security (particularly AlphaDot as its cheaper) has value in bike security, providing its not used as a sole measure of security (joyriders won't care about it at all). The "good" thing about tagging, is that it's the one security technology i'd be happy to declare as it's "enabled" on the bike at all times (NB: Check the small-print that they can't wiggle out of paying if it wasn't fitted by a dealer or something daft!), whereas with declaring physical security/alarms etc, if they weren't enabled at the time, you're screwed. So pay for AlphaDot or something, tell the insurer its on the bike to get the security discount that'll probably pay for buying it in the first place, and put the stickers on to deter professional thieves (a little).

heh i never considered it would stop a bike theft . its just i would like to know where my most prized possesion i spent 9 months plus making myself with love and pride had gone . so i could find the culprit him/them. people may say it is just a bike and in no way in equal value to a human life . well i value my bike more than most peoples lives . it took 9 months to make the same time a woman takes to have a child. and to me it is my child i gave life to

chains ,disc locks/brake locks . are all easily defeated by 2-3 men and a transit van when they pick it up and throw it in the back if not chained to something and even if they are they just need heavy duty bolt crops or even a battery grinder . anyone can brake a steering lock and id imagine almost everyone can bypass an ignition . so i understand perfectly why u are no fan of bike security and crooks are.

Just something I do with my car, probably will do the same on my bike someday when arsed. It has a 'tracker installed+logo' stuck on the inside window, both sides of the car...Do it anyway if you don't have one, make up the company Smile Will a thicko be willing to find out if it's a real sticker?

Helps a bit if a thief is deciding to pinch something..although if they can't read, doh!

As for my sticker being real, who knows?...Could be, might not be Wink

Old thread just seen. Strikes me as a bit of a cake/eat it post, or damned if you do or if you don't. Presumably you'd like to filter out illegitimate claims in order to keep your overall premium down so asking the question shouldn't be an issue. It's a valid point since most people have two keys at least to any vehicle. If there's any suspicious circumstances then they'll be investigated by an impartial loss adjuster.

Its been a while but I think the sentiment was more about insurers acting the arse when you need them to do their bit. If they dont ask up front how many keys you have then pull it out of the bag upon a claim then its utter shit if you only had the one key to start with. The original poster was worried about precisely that and I aimed to appease those worties.

No cakes were mentioned or harmed, just a heavy suggestion that an insurer doesnt care if a claim is genuine or false as they would sleep better at night knowing they could do you over no matter what!
