Piston ring interchangabiity
Hi peeps
Wanted to know if you can use any piston rings on a piston if they are the same bore diameter have a set of gsxr 750 72mm rings was going to use on my yzf 750 any thoughts?

As well as engine bore and stroke needing to be identical for them to fit,there may be differences in how the rings cope with oil lubrication and the actual width/type of metal used.I'd say stay well clear unless you speak to a specialist engine builder.

Out of intrest why would stroke affect piston rings if the yzf750 pistons are being used

Hi

Several different designs of rings.

There are L shaped rings, rings with a tapered profile, etc.

Also other dimensions vary, sometimes even on the same model (Rotax / Aprilia changed the thickness of the rings on the RS125 engine in the 1990s).

some engines can be the same cc but vary in bore/stroke.Its down to how they engineer the combustion chamber,sometimes I come across the term 'oversquare' where the bore is bigger than the stroke,so the pistons would be a different shape for the same cc.
Unless you know what your doing I would'nt take a chance ,even if the rings were exactly the same,considering the risk/time/money involved in rebuilding a larger engine.Speak to an engine specialist.
