My bike didnt come with a centre stand so I got one of ebay and this evening iv'e set about fitting it.

I spent half an hour trying to wrestle the massive spring into position though and gave up as it got dark.

How on earth am I supposed to fit the spring? It looks like an Arnold Schwarzenegger job to get it to extend it enough Confused

I'll give that a go tomorrow. Also, theres a second smaller spring. Where does this hook onto? As there is only one hook on the stand and on the bike by the looks of things.

One method I've seen used on Africa Twin/Transalp centrestand springs is to get a load of two pence pieces and shove one between each coil of the spring (bend the spring to pop them in whilst it's off the bike).

This lengthens it so it's easy to fit over the hooks. Then get a pair of pliers and pull the coins out one at a time.

I seem to remember using a pair of needle nose pliers and a screwdriver and levering the C shaped bit onto the pin.

It was a pain in the cock though.

Buy a spring puller

https://www.dirtbikebitz.com/images/products/workshop/spring-puller.jpg

Very useful things. I have a selection of much smaller ones for working on printers and photocopiers, very useful tools. They prevent all the swearing and hours grovelling on the floor when you almost get the spring on, only for it suddenly to ping off in a completely random direction.

Thumbs Up

A friend of mine who has a CBR6 had the exact same problem. But found this solution worked a treat:

ratchet strap round the rear wheel to pull the spring so its long enough, then man handle it into place with screwdrivers etc.

spring puller is nowhere near strong enough to pull the springs. you've got to put some serious pulling force on it to stretch it as far as you need to

That shoelace trick seems like a good idea! Cant put coins into the slots as it is covered in a sheath.

The spring is strong as hell, dont think those pullers will work, it's like pulling a solid metal rod.

I'll have another crack tomorrow.

I used a philips screwdriver for my spring. Hook over screwdriver and hook screwdriver over the pin on the side satand and pull down. The spring should slide down the screwdriver and use a flat screwdriver to guide the hook over the right direction. Try and do it with the sidestand in the up position where you have less pull on the spring.

Seriously, a spring puller and loads of force, string like suggested and a rag to protect you're hand, it might sound girlie but fucking hell the amount of times i've needed a rag to aid me is unreal, pain is pain at the end of the day and the amount of force needed for new springs is ridiculous.

As Mistergixer said, you need a spring puller.

You will use it a fair few times pnce you buy it and you will be SHOCKED at how much easier it makes fitting springs, you will have it done in seconds. Not only that but it makes it safer too, a lot of the methods for putting springs on in other ways can be a fair bit more dangerous than a spring puller which is the proper tool for the job.

Most hardware/tool stores will have one, if not just order one off eBay next-day delivery.

Hope that helps! Thumbs Up!

That's because Mistergixer has refitted centre stand springs several times on several different bikes and consequently does have a bit of a clue as to what he's talking about.

I would like to point out that these were never my own bikes, centrestands are only ever fitted to ghey bikes. I think that's the nature of the problem - ghey bikes are owned by ghey riders, softly little ghey boys who haven't got the man strength to pull a spring into place. If i didn't have a spring puller, i would do them using my teeth.

i tried two types of spring puller to do the same job on my cbf. bent the hook bit off both of them.

the honda springs are strong as fuck, like one end in a vice and a big screwdriver through the other and still we couldn't open the spring up

Fecking hell they aren't that bad, took me about a minute to figure it out using a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. You don't need special tools unless you have special needs.

That was on a bike with identical centre stand design, try doing the two springs separately, it was ages ago I did it but that sounds familiar.
