I have a bit of an issue with shoulder checks I forgot all about before ordering bike, licence and CBT.

I've got a condition called cervical spondylitis (basically mushy vertebrae) which makes twisting my head to look over my shoulders painful and also I just physically can't turn my head as much as other people.

Is it ok to turn your upper body when you shoulder check?
When I start my training I'll mention this to the instructor and see what he says but thought I'd ask you guys too.

Hmmm.

You don't want to turn your body at any sort of speed, it'll upset your balance.

Is this a registered condition? You may have to convince the DSA examiner when you go for your tests.

It wasn't listed as one of the conditions I had to put down on the medical form the DVLA sent me so I don't know if it's a registered condition or not.....I didn't inform them though as I just remembered it now lol.

My GP and consultant know about it though.

Don't panic, there are work arounds. One of my students had broken his neck at some point and had to do the whole upper body turn around thing. As long as you don't upset the balance of the bike while doing so it shouldn't be a problem; he passed first time Very Happy

Another student from a school that I worked for but didn't train personally couldn't move his neck at all; this was sorted by rigging up a shit load of blind spot mirrors on the training bike. He also passed first time.

Speak to the training school, if they're half decent then they'll get it sorted. Where there's a will there's a way Thumbs Up

Edit: whereabouts in the country are you? Couldn't see from your profile?

I have a similar problem when it comes to looking over my left shoulder, because of a crooked ribcage I have to twist my body to the left as my head can't turn far enough for a good look. Got used to it with time and it doesn't affect my balance now.

Considering how I passed my test a few months ago I'd think its acceptable to do your observations however you choose so long as you do them and remain in control of the bike Thumbs Up

Though from a safety point of view, I'd probably add some extra mirrors (or blind spot mirrors) to the bike so that I could still check the blind area without having to turn around.
