As the title says are they any good for storing the helmet in, just thinking so I have something to actually store the helmet in for when i'm at university next month.

Don't have a top box/means to get one at the moment, i'm looking into the rucksacks but after something that will keep it more protected. Don't want to leave it strapped on to my bike as you never know what anyone will do to it whilst your away from the bike.

So anyone used them before ?

Yes, they come free with your helmet, and I don't use it as it offers sweet f all protection apart from minor scratches and UV damage. Buy a proper helmet bag rather than the one pictured.

I had one free with my Shoie XR1000. Never bothered to use after the initial week I had the helmet. Thought it was fairly pointless and I haven't seen it since.

Problem with the bags you get with the helmets is they're a) slippery as fcuk and b) have the world's least useful strap. In terms of 'ease of carrying', you're better off sticking your arm through it!

UV damage is basically a myth nowadays anyway. About 15 years ago polycarbonate lids were affected but modern helmets are no longer affected by UV exposure.

I agree though, that type of helmet bag is useless.

The free bags are only useful for carrying your spare visor around in.

I got one free with me £60 helmet. It said in the users manual to always store it in the helmet bag. I don't though, I don't see the point.

The thin cloth bags that often come with your lid, are really only there to keep the dust out and stop the paint getting scratched.

You can get padded hat-sacks,m that offer a bit more 'bump' protection if you are carrying them around, but they wont protect it from a 'drop'.

Snowie has just bid on a top box; ABS plastic, bolted to the bike, you can store your hat in it, on the bike.... though probably a good idea to use a bicycle cable lock through the rack and box handle to make it more 'secure'.

Good way to give yourself a place to keep your hat and keep it a 'bit' safer. On the bike, in the box, less chance of it being bumped or knocked or dropped, but its not a bank vault.

Many top boxes you can unlock from the bike, and carry around like a suit case, if you don't want to leave them on the bike. Case gives 'some' added protection, but I always wrapped my hat in a towel inside my hard panniers, because rattling about a bit 'loose' inside, got more scuffed up and knocked about than saved!

Basically, depends what you want to do.

Commuting to college, rack, (as we talked about) and a 'cheapish' top box bolted to the top, and bicycle cable lock through rack and top box handle back to rack, for added security, is probably the most effective and practical way about it. Gives you somewhere to put your books when you have the hat on, and are riding there, then you can remove books, and swap for hat.. lock up, and not have extraniouse luggage in the lid to lug about, or worry of it being knocked about, lost or stolen.

Having done college and uni, and biked it there every day, when I was a student, and had 'loose' hat to lug about...... it is VERY worth while.

When you have to get 'in' to lectures, and are being jostled by throngs of hung over students trying to get to lecture on time, find a place in class, sit for two hours with hat on floor next to you, lad behind or next to you fidgiting, stretching and falling to sleep, kicking your hat..... unable to squeeze the thing into the three inch wide locker you probably aren't assigned any more, that would be two miles the other side of campus anyway... etc..... moving from class to SU Bar, and back, trying to find quiet part of library to sleep through a free period, etc etc etc...... lost of opportunity for hats to get fucked basically!

In may day, 'We got by'... I think that there was always SOME smart arse with a C90 or something that had a top box, we took the piss out of ('propper' bike riders; I had an AR125! Mate had a VF500, another a CB125S, another an EJ900, and lad with GSX550; Post-Grad Metrology lecturer, even had a bevel drive Ducati!)... but I think we ALL secretly coveted Dave's Rickman Top box on his C90!

Asked after I saw them all in the corridor Wink

Ring your department - ours were organised by the physics society, but nearly every department had them, as well as there being some in the SU>

Hardly a myth. Carbon fibre doesn't like UV, nor does kevlar or the resins that bond them both. Paint finish would certainly suffer as well. Fabrics fade quicker. UV screws with stuff. Sit in the sun for a day - then tell me UV damage is a myth.

UV damaging modern helmets is a myth - find me one reference from the past 5 years where the integrity of a helmet shell has been compromised by UV and I will admit I am wrong. Modern fibre helmets have UV resistant coatings that are very effective, even the polycarbonate helmets of old where people were specifically instructed to keep them out of sunlight when stored were found in several long term examples to be fine even after daily 24hr exposure for several years.

The mechanisms by which UV causes damage in human tissues (namely double strand DNA breaks) and the mechanisms in which it causes damage in helmets is totally unrelated.

Can't be arsed looking any further. UV fucks things up.

Plus point however for mentioning DNA, it made you sound quite clever. Thumbs Up

I have a Knox backpack that has a webbing bit you can stick your helmet in, secure enough to carry around on your back, just need to be aware of it when you turn corners and near people. You're not supposed to ride with a helmet in the netting, but I've found it was secure enough to do so today.

Bought one of these a while back....

https://motorcycleworldl-spa.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=11

It folds up to bumbag size which clips around your waist while riding & opens up to take your helmet(sounds like summat else Twisted Evil ).....which you then wear as a backpack.

good item Thumbs Up

It will stop little marks getting on your helmet, won't protect it from impacts though.

Won't do any harm to have one.

If I can find one of mine lying around you can have it.

I'd guess it's not recommended for while riding for safety reasons more than anything. It might be secure enough but if you come off the bike the helmet on your back will likely do you some harm or at least fuck up the lid in the netting.

I don't blame you for not being arsed to look any further, I genuinely do not think you will find anything - as far as I am aware there have been no documented cases of UV damage having an effect on the integrity of a helmet shell for a good 10 years or more. I know UV can have an effect on carbon fibre and other resins but in reality the coatings do such a good job that other things will fuck up the lid well before UV will - sweat for instance can see out the polystyrene liner in a helmet getting daily use in about 3 years.
