PostPosted: 10:59 - 19 Aug 2011    Post subject: Which beer? Reply with quote

Morning all,
A friend of mine is doing my dad quite a big favour in getting him a cheap iPad through work and Dad as a non drinker has asked me to get the friend some beers to say thanks.

My experience of beer ranges to ordering a fosters or carlsberg from the local pub so I've no idea whats good and I'd like to get him some decent stuff as he's somewhat of a beer geek having worked in bars for a couple of years.

So basically, what recommendations do you lot who like the beery brew and know your stuff recommend? I know tesco do loads of single bottle buys from the random makes so was thinking a hand picked selection of them. He's 22 and is also partial to an Ale if that makes any difference and I'd like to keep it to around £10-15 if possible (its not that massive a favour).

TIA

My favourite is Loddon Ferryman's Gold but it's a localish brew (out Reading way) so you may or may not be able to get it. Old Hooky is good too.

Tastes in ales vary so it'll depend on what his particular tastes are. If you want a nationally available ale you could do a lot worse than Bombardier or Spitfire, but a selection would enhance your chances of getting him something he actually likes.

I'm quite partial to Cwrw Haf and Cwrw Braf brewed by Tomos Watkins both very easy to drink. Cwrw Haf is my favourite though as it's pale hops. If you can find Flower Power anywhere I thoroughly recommend it. My local had it on tap the other week and my god it made my mouth orgasm again it's pale hops I've no idea who brews it though.

Can't technically be called a beer as it's been freeze distilled. Laughing

Courage Directors, Old Speckled Hen, Waggle Dance, Black Sheep.

Best off to get a few bottles of a few different ales. That's what I always get so I can dabble.

I'd say your first instinct is the best - get him a random selection of ales, one of each. Unfortunately, the dearer ones are usually the better ones, but if there's an offer on go for that.

Oh and mix the styles up; stout, porter, IPA, pale ale, bitter, mild (there are others but I can't think of any more South Englandshire styles). You can judge by the different colours if you don't know the nomenclature.

I either brew nice beer, at no stronger than 12% or I go balls to the wall with turbo cider.
I might try the 19% turbo cider and freeze distill it to something stupid. Twisted Evil
Good luck with the birthday, watch the hangover though, last time I did turbo cider I had it for two days Shocked

Indeed!
Although you can pick up the lab equipment for not a lot. Long as you know what you're doing it's all good! Could do some proper distillation then!

I'd avoid the one of each strategy. You just get a good taste of a beer and want some more of the same, then find that the next bottled brew has a flavour that is radically different and clashes badly with the one you've just tried. At least two bottles of any selection IMHO

Directors is great, also a fan of Timothy Taylors Landlord, and if you can find it anywhere Eldridge Pope Royal Oak.

Good advice if you're doing a bit of comparison. I do the same for Whisky if I'm making a night of it. Always start with light Speysiders or Lowlanders then onto the Islands and Islay ones Very Happy

Need to get more selection of Ale's for the house so I'll take a few notes from this thread Thumbs Up
I seem to prefer lighter IPA's and Ale's to the darker stouts etc. Completely opposite from my taste for Whisky, where I much prefer the heavy peaty Isaly's and Islands Malts.

How do you avoid concentrating the congeners and methanol?

I'm not entirely sure, I've never looked deeply into it as I've never really wanted to go down that route. Hence the 'long as you know what you're doing' bit Laughing

Failing that you can pick up a 'water distiller' from a brewsite I know of and pick up the bits and bobs that go with it.
Make the mash then run it through the distiller and hey presto! 5 Litres of 19% shitey tastying crap turns into 700ml of 60% which you then dilute down to 40% with water at 1L and add flavourings.

EDIT: After a quick bit of reading it would seem that whenever distilling via the normal method it is practice to throw away the first 50-100ml that is run off as this is where the methanol lies. You also stop before the very end as this contains fusels which apparently taste like crap! Thinking

Exactly, I it's just that I can't think of an equivalent method of getting rid of the crap if you use freeze distillation. There must be one, though, otherwise distillers like Brewdog would be poisoning people.
