Just using my old thread to keep my progress all contained in a single post rather than dotted in several threads accross the forum Very Happy

Just passed my theory today followed by a nice ride out to a friends (where I definately followed the speed limit! Rolling Eyes ).
Got 50/50 on the questions and 55/75 on the hazard perception part, so overall quite pleased with the results.
Now just got to order myself some training cones to practise it all with the correct measurements and make sure I'm ready. I'll probably book it at Burton on Trent (23 miles away!) rather than Wigston in Leicester (7 miles) due to the 6 weeks difference in waiting times Laughing
Well hopefully I'll be reporting back here with more happy stories rather than sob stories Laughing

============OLD THREAD BELOW============

Edit: Theory now booked for 6/09/11

I class myself as a competent biker, obviously not with a lot of experience yet though, and with my own bad habits.

I'm revising theory at the moment, I plan to book that soon. But I would like to know whether MOD 1 can be passed easily without lessons?
I don't have any spare pennies really, I'm deciding to go for my full license now rather than being able to insure myself next year (bloody insurance has gone up, and I've had no claims Evil or Very Mad ), so push bike next year I'm thinking for the 9 mile commute. Shocked
So with no pennies, I'm rather hoping to do as much as possible without lessons (i think if I take lessons I wont be able to afford MOD2 until santa brings some wonga! Wink )

So honest recommendations, please - lessons or no lessons?

That's reassuring to know Thumbs Up

From what I've seen on youtube, it looks to be quite easy? Check your shoulders (as if you were on a road) before moving anywhere, and follow the instructions given to you - oh, and don't drop the bike Laughing

Is that about it really?
Obviously I'll practise the U-turns, emergency stop and stopping at a target box off road somewhere Smile

Yup, watch the vids on youtube, pop to your local test centre to watch other riders do it, its easier now as well due to the changes to the speed element, plus you get a practise run now as well. Myself and others from the site passed this and mod2 without any training, just do your homework and practise where you can. Thumbs Up

Alright guys, thanks for the positive input! Smile

Get this theory out of the way and keep practising. So with the test centres, can you just like pull up in the car park, watch the riders then just ride off - all at will?
It's nice to know people have passed Mod1&2 without training, gives me hope. I'll be try to making sure I kick myself out of my bad habits as well!

I passed the Mod 1 with one lesson on the test centre - which basically pointed me in the direction of more self-teaching and practice in figure of 8s. No other instruction and I passed first time

Yep, just go to test centre, park up, not in bays reserved for tests and watch through the fence, stay all day if you want, even talk to some instructors / candidates.

I'm glad I asked this question here - I'd have never known about parking up at the test centre and watching, but that does sound like an invaluable resource to me Smile

Edit: found a nice resource! https://www.shires-motorcycle-training.co.uk/bike_training_images/motorcycle_test_mod1.pdf[/url]

Well done! Hopefully I'll be able to say that one day, though not sure if I want to risk the money on mod2 without lessons.

I feel that I have great control over the bike - just need to make sure I've got all the road rules perfect before taking the test!
The empty car park will give me all the training I need for Mod1 though I should imagine Smile

MOD 1 should be easily passable without intructor training, just lots of training yourself, I do however have one suggestion! I failed my MOD first time on the hazard avoidance, so practice it over and over, using cones! Not gloves or other silly items, definitely cones because they're easier to hit than you think and you'll fail instantly if you even touch a single cone. (I borrowed some from work and some from a construction site opposite where I was practicing, but apparently they're £4 for 6 at Tesco, unvarified)

So here's what you do:

Lay the cones out exactly as they are laid out on the test yard (just google MOD 1 layout) I cant post a picture on here cos I'm using my computer at work ( Shhh! Shifty ) then practise left circuit AND right circuit because you could get either! (basically left-right swerve or right-left swerve)

Now you need to know exactly how far apart all the cones are:

Go to youtube and type in "MOD 1 bike test dimensions"

The first video should be the one I used cos he includes a link to the photo with the dimensions on it. If thats not it I'll check at home this afternoon for you. Just let me know Laughing

That's handy to know - thanks! I never really thought about cones being easier to knock over than, say a small rock or something, but it's fairly obvious when you think about it Laughing

I'm not worried about the bend at all, that's only 19mph; but cones to practise the stops, hazard avoidance, etc. That's a must - I'll be doing that to make sure I've got it all nailed! Smile

I need to get my arse in to gear and book my theory soon though - I've not failed a practise one yet (though HPT keeps going borderline Evil or Very Mad )

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch then get the HPT tests apps, I was doing them everywhere, even on the loo Embarassed

Passed first time though Laughing just remember .... they're not looking for you to click on the "potential" hazard, they're looking for you to click on the "developing hazard"

I had to learn this cos I'm a car driver and was spotting things very early but getting 0 points cos I was clicking sooner than the points window started! When you see a potential hazard in the distance, dont click until it starts to develop into a hazard, but find the balance, the apps were invaluable!

I passed first time without training on Mod 1, 1 minor on the E-stop speed (mod 2 I found considerably trickier, and eventually did take some training).

I used this video to get an idea of what to do and how to behave - although the test has changed slightly since that was made, it's still a very good demonstration.

I practiced in an empty car park nearby (try asking friendly local driving or riding instructors where one is - worked for me!), and as Angel Girl said, found out the Mod 1 dimensions and set up different bits of it and practiced one at a time. I deliberately set my cones a little closer together (about 5 metres U-turn, 4 metres apart for the slalom, etc) in order that on the test day it would all be easy in comparison - which it was and so I could concentrate on making sure I did all the "test stuff".

It may be worth finding out which specific layout your Mod 1 course uses by going along and checking it out, as mentioned above. Give you an idea of what to do and more importantly, what not to, and you'll know what to expect when you're doing it.

I am looking at doing the same, but won't you need to do the test on a 500cc bike, unless your doing your restricted license and you can do the tests on a 125cc?? Surprised

also helps if you go to the test center and watch some other people doing it first so its not to alien for you when you go. Thumbs Up

Bearing in mind that Mod 1 has been slightly easier since May this year, and that you're clearly a smart cookie, you shouldn't have any problems.

There's nothing particularly difficult in it, just take a deep breath before starting every manoeuvre , keep making observations, and peg it for the speed tests - don't look at your speedo, it won't make you go any faster.

That's very frustrating isn't it! I failed my first HPT earlier (using "Driving Test Success 2011") and failed (marginally) due to clicking on a hazard a split second before the computer registered it. To me, once you see a fricken tractor committing to turning right across the road in front of you, it should be a hazard! But nope, it appears that (on that clip atleast) you have to wait till they're touching your side of the road! Neutral

That's a nice tip, I never really thought about doing that - but yeah I think I'll try that. If I can do that easy peasy then the test should be almost effortless! Very Happy

I'm going for the A2 license, but because I'm under 21 I can't do the DAS yet, so yes I'll be on a restriction for 2 years once completing the MOD2 test. But you can do the test (I'm fairly sure) on a 125 (I get a good 70 out of mine anyway.. umm.. I mean 60 Rolling Eyes )

Rogerborg wrote:

Not too worried about the speed element - my bike gets to the required speed in no time, and I'd probably do the turn faster too.. 19 seems a little slow? I do have to use a roundabout on my commute at national speed which feels to me like it has the same turning circle (right term?). Whether this sounds cocky or not, but I was rather relieved when on a video it told me you're allowed to go over the speed Laughing

Anyway everyone, thanks for all your input! You've inspired me to go lesson-less! As for MOD2, I've just downloaded all the test routes used by my local test centre, I can go and get used to the roads! And get my dad in a car to give me a mock test (he started training for a driving instructor at one time).

Hopefully (once I get myself round to doing my theory) I'll be reporting back here with success stories (or sob-unfair examiner stories Wink )

That would be handy to have. Do they have that for all test centers or just yours?

Got a link please matey? Smile

Just mine I'm afraid - but you can probably find yours too. If you find the website of the test centre you'll take your test with, the routes are often on their websites.
If you're interested in the routes I've found, I don't have the link anymore - but I could probably find it in a few secs if you want the Leicester one?

It is easy to set something up to practice for yourself if you can find somewhere quiet, i used a local industrial estate with some bricks and debris lying around for my slalom and figure of eight also just used the road markings for the u-turn, found a nice long stretch for the emercency stop and controlled stop, the swerve was the only one i couldnt practice (so i failed my first mod 1)but i booked it right away again and thought i would do everything the same way and when it came to the swerve i would go round it a bit slower and get sent to do it again and thats what happened on my second test the examiner told me i only did 46kph so do it again only faster, so by now i knew excactly where to swerve and i did it,passed it with one minor for going to slow on the manouvre and told to do it again, so you can do it,,good luck with it mate.

Okay, cheers! Smile
I think I should be able to find myself an industrial estate to practise on. Currently I've found myself a really quiet road 5m wide to practise my u-turn on, so the 7.5m on the test should be easy! Very Happy
Hopefully I can find somewhere to practise the swerve, but if not then your way seems like such a good way to do it, rather than failing it twice at high speed!
Thanks for wishing me luck! Smile
