Just seen a link on FB about one of the Red Arrows crashing
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-14602900
hope the pilot ejected ok and its not anything that could potentially stop the displays in future.
Confused

They really are some of the most skilled pilots, sure hope he ejected in time.

Just saw on the stats thing they can go 915MPH in a dive.. Fuuu

I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15 meters (50ft) above the ground racing across the fields," he said. "It impacted and bounced across the field."

He said two members of the public jumped into a nearby river to search for the pilot, who had ejected moments before the crash.

I saw them fly over head the other day whilst I was outside working.

Bouncing across a field and pulling the pilot out the river does not sound good at all though.

Not totally surprising TBH. They do countless displays all over the place all year. Along with all the training and practise runs that they do it's not surprising that there will be the odd failure (pilot or mechanical). I bet if you had the stats you'd find they were one of the safest air units around, but that doesn't mean they're invulnerable.
I expect this will stop any more displays for a few weeks while they look into exactly what went wrong, but in the long term i think it'll be business as usual.

@DefenceHQ: It is with sadness that the MOD must confirm the death of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging of the RAF Aerobatics Team.

Populated area. He stayed with the aircraft until he was sure it was safe to ditch, by which time it was too late. When I was in primary school an RAF pilot crashed in to the field next to the school and made no attempt to eject.

Proper proper hero if this is the case.

Extremely sad, though it appears he did his utmost being totally selfness in getting away from houses etc before crashing...one would presume as parachute was visible he maybe tried and didn't quite make it.

RIP and thoughts to family and friends.

The last Red Arrow to die was 33 years ago, the year Red 4 was born. Hell of a safety record given the displays they do.

RIP Red 4

It was Shoreham Battle of Britain air show today too, so I wondered if the aircraft we were seeing we were sharing with Bournemouth?

RIP to the pilot who lost his life to crash his plane in an unpopulated place. One brave man, one real hero. Karma

I think they would have done the BoB thing earlier in the day. The Reds went from the Bournemouth seafront back to Bournemouth airport where they have been for a few days IIRC, and on return they did a thankyou pass to the airport before the accident happened. The red that crashed was in the river, which is right next to the start of north Bournemouth. If the plane was left to fly it would have gone straight into residential areas, so he certainly deserves an award.

Fella was the same age as me. He was far better than me at something really cool and died doing what he loved. I will live a mediocre life and die in a nursing home somewhere (or in whatever apocalypse happens in the meantime). I doff my cap in his general direction and wish his family well for the future.

I hope he receives the George Cross for such a courageous act of gallantry. A truly brave man and if he does have any children I hope they live their life knowing their Father was a man of such high calibre.

Per Ardua ad Astra Flight Lieutenant Egging, you aren't struggling to get there now, you're among them.

I don't have to know him. And I doubt he needs protecting, he's big enough to fend for himself.

No shit it was a joke, I doubt he meant it for real. But, considering most people rate the Red Arrows as pretty awesome, it wasn't required.

That sort of joke is awkward, misplaced and surplus to requirements.

(Sorry, this is BCF, we have to uphold shit values and lack of any sort of decency.)
