Hi,

People keep telling me I Must change the can on the '06 Bandit 650 K6 I bought on Saturday.
I was really intending keeping the standard can til I needed a new one to keep my costs down a bit.
After looking at cans on e-bay etc I'm wondering if anyone knows a good, reputable place that might do a part exchange for my bog standard can?

The current can is in perfect nick,no scratches, marks or signs of rust. It's done 6.8k miles but honestly you'd never know that.

Cheers for any help or advice Smile

If you do buy a new can keep hold of the original! If you smash it down the road or want to sell the bike as standard its always good to have the original can laying around. Thumbs Up

Standard ones are worth nothing. If you really don't want it, ebay it, but I'd be stunned if it goes for more than £10.

Cheap is kinda relevant atm....cheapest I've seen so far is a Viper for £125.
Yeah it's cheap as chips but I'm off today to buy clothing and boots, still need tax and insurance for the bike so my savings are diminishing at a serious rate of knots.

I was ok with keeping the standard can but had about 6 people comment on it now and they all say I should ditch it.Maybe I should just tell people to keep their noses out Razz

What kind of viper and refresh my memory to the fitting - is it a slip on 52mm or bolt on type?

This type of Viper?

Standard cans are worth nothing, keep it for MOTs or for selling with the bike when you come to flog it - it is nice to have the original parts included when you buy a bike.

Aye Jimbo that looks like the Viper I was checking out on E-bay.If memory serves it comes without a baffle though...will I need to buy one or will the baffle out of my old can fit?

It says road legal so that should mean that riding without the baffle is legal too?

Keep an eye out for second hand cans, but c'mon, if the bike needs a can, then you've probably picked the wrong bike because it should be fun/good what ever it sounds like!

You could always make engine noises in your helmet Razz.

The current can is spot on,not even marked or discoloured. It sounds fine and everything.

Just figured if 6 different people all said "get that ugly lump of shit off the bike" then there must be a reason why they all say it.

Just figured I'd see what my options are.If it's purely aesthetics then I can live with the standard can.

Tricky.

Technically not legal with the baffle out, but you'll do well to be done for a loud can unless you're shitty to the copper/he's a jobsworth or it's offensively loud.

It's only £60 no points, possible rectification notice anyway.

Had a race can on all my bikes bar one(including a couple that set off car alarms) and never even been pulled.

Very good point that man. It's not like you look at the can while riding,it's only when you're stopped......and no one buys a bike to sit and look at it Very Happy

Can't really see or hear the can when riding.

So sticking with the truck exhaust. Keeps the neighbours happy Shhh!

I never found the noise to be too 'in your face'

In fact it gave it a nice burble on tickover and rasp when going through the box.

I have a Viper can just like that one, well I had two the same and sold one on ebay but still have another here currently Whistle

Heh, I'll freely admit I'm a hypocrite here and have had race cans on most of my bikes, though have only ever bought one for a road bike - and that was more for saving weight off road and getting the better FI map (on my KTM690). Haven't bothered with the other road bikes that didn't come with them.

I DO like the sound and anecdotal evidence suggests it does actually make a bit of a difference when filtering. But then out on the open road, while it may also help, it'll also help the cops with a speed gun put their doughnuts down and point it at you Wink.

The viper isn't loud enough to warrant a baffle, it's about right for the road in answer to your question.

Also baffles in them just make it sound like the bike is farting.

Viper cans are good, I got rid of mine because it made my Fazer run a bit lumpy at the bottom end. I'm after a link pipe to fit it to my CBR as it will probably be better on there.

Just keep the standard can for now. You can always but a cheap viper end can and link pipe separately. The link pipes are only about £35.

Almost certainly not. Strictly speaking removable baffles are not legal, hence some (like Akrapovic) put a tiny spot weld on the bolt holding the removable baffle in place. As such to remove it you have to break the weld (easy) so they can claim that it isn't removable.

It is also technically an offence to make a vehicle louder even if it is still quieter than the legal limit but never heard of anyone being done for this with a bike.

Older Bandit exhausts were renowned for being lousy for performance, so they are one of the few bikes where you can get a significant improvement in performance from just playing with the exhaust.

All the best

Keith

I have found a differance in the reactions of cagers with my CCC can since the baffle "fell out". Mainly that they actually do react and notice me approaching, far fewer pull out on me from side roads.

I thought I was imagining it so put the baffle back and hay presto, cagers pulling out on me Rolling Eyes

I may have a can for sale soon, just got to decide if the CCC (Carbon Can Company) exhaust is going or the stubbied Blue Flame, which on my V-twin is obnoxiously loud, it would be quieter on a bandit.

See, I always thought this but was pleasantly surprised!

I have the full original system for my GSX-R that was never used as it was replaced with the full Akrapovic system before it turned a revolution and I've seen them (the full system) sell on eBay for over £600! Was quite a surprise actually. Without the headers etc the two cans tend to go for £100-£200.

A twin can setup on a 1000cc sports bike being worth more than the potato cannon on the back of a very common naked is hardly ground breaking news - if anything scratching at £100 (the going rate on ebay atm) for the pair is less than they should be worth.

Standard 650 bandit cans go for less than £35, same story for my bike. After delivery and listing fees it is probably going to net about £20.

Even in your case with your shiny new set you might as well keep them.

Finances have been stretched so I've decided to run the standard can into the ground before replacing it with something sportier.
