Did they know you from your pre-test days?
Usually coppers don't waste time unless they have some reason to think there's a problem with the owner or vehicle.

Had a friend who bought a car from what turned out to be a well known dealer....the amount of stops we got and shit from the law was unreal.

Some police men/women are pricks and do everything they can to try and catch you out for something.. on a motorbike I guess it depends what your wearing and what kinda bike you are on.

Went out on my first day riding (on my own) and bumped into a police car (parked up opposite side) all he did was put his thumb up insinuating cool or nice one.

my back was acheing on the coventry ringroad so i was going down the hill no handed whilst adjusting my underpants and straightning my back for a few moments rolling alongside me was a 2 up police car ...looked at me ...i looked at them ....shook there head at me . that was that . they must like me . and i dont blame them

Lifesavers are supposed to be a quick glance beside you, not behind. OP take note...... Your mirrors are for whats behind you, your lifesaver is to make sure that cyclist isnt right along side you in your blind spot. Looking too far behind you will make the bike move on the road, which you dont want. A little glance to your side, not behind. You wont draw attention to yourself by the bike hating police that way too. Thumbs Up

Hmmmm, conflicting training then. I was taught to be be distinct in what a lifesaver was for the benefit of a examiner.

I was told be seen to 'put yout chin to your shoulder' when doing a lifesaver so the examiner doesnt just think you are checking your mirror.

Meh. Test passed and I havent died recently. If a cyclist is in my blind spot approaching a corner then fair play to him for matching my cruising speed. Laughing

Coppers aren't examiners.....9 out of 10 coppers wouldn't notice if you didn't do any at all.

There are two different things here. Learning to pass your test, and learning to ride. Wink

Minty. I was always instructed to emphasise the mirror checks and lifesavers for the benifit of the examinor but in reality you can check your mirrors by hardly moving your head and was always taught that a lifesaver is to make sure your not being cut up or about to cut up someone at your side.

When you think about it, all chin to shoulder is on any bike is a look down your side and not behind you.

When i did my IAM a lifesaver was a glance in your blindspot before changing direction etc.

a full look behind you was classed as rear obs and used before moving off or pulling out from a junction

I would imagine that the lack of a rear tail light will be why they pulled you over at first. If they thought your shoulder checks were you turning to look at them a lot, then that may have made them wonder why you were so concerned about them. A cop will always look at your bike, check your tax, PNC it, etc, while they talk to you. In their mind, if the tail light is gone, is anything else wrong too?

In terms of a Section 59, they do have something on you. It covers both you and the bike you were on. So if you are on a different bike and commit a further offence, they can still take it off you, so be aware. It lasts for 12 months, so if it was over 12 months ago, you are back to two strikes.

so what your saying is that when your bike gets nicked youl be happey for them to not pull who they like for no reason?

say your bike was nicked and had some dodgy plates stuck on and didnt show anything on the ANPR cameras then youd never get your bike back.

still funny when their wrong though.

Yes, I'd STILL expect them to have a reason to pull a bike - such as "I believe this bike may be stolen", which seems legitimate - as per the example you describe.

As for the OP - when you say 'corners', do you mean actual corners, or junctions. If the former, you shouldn't really need to be doing a test-life saver in a corner, unless you don't have any mirrors, anyway.
For a junction, yes, it makes sense.

The only reason plod need to stop you is the want to check your documents for the vehicle.

As stated a lifesaver is a check that nothing is in your blindspot / immediate vicinity before you make a change in direction / turn. If you want to check for miles behind that nothing is trying a crazy overtake then personally I would go for mirrors. I certainly wouldn't want to negotiate a corner looking backwards.......

I'd say having no rear light on a bike is a pretty dim thing to happen and the OP came away lightly. Maybe he should be thanking the plod for saving his bacon Wink
