I changed the clutch plates and springs in my TLR a couple of weeks ago, and since then I've found that the clutch is sticking (I assume) when cold.

What's happening is that after it's been left a while I'm not able to push the bike in gear with the clutch it. If I rock it back and forth hard enough it'll unstick and then I'll be able to push it, but it'll be harder than before.

Also, if I start it in gear with the clutch in, it'll jerk forward more than it used to. It doesn't have any clutch drag after a few seconds though (i.e. if I hold the clutch in it will just roll freely).

I'm not sure what the cause of this is, and whether it's anything to worry about? The springs I put in claim to be 10% stiffer, so that might be the cause? Or it's some kind of vacuum lock?

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks Smile

i take it this is a standard EBC kit you've put in?

did all the friction plates measure up to the same size?

Also have you tried to adjust the cables since installing the new clutch?

Yep, standard EBC and the plates were all the same size.

The TLR has a hydraulic clutch, so I haven't adjusted anything.

did you soak the plates in oil overnight beforehand? if not it might be worth just taking everything apart and putting it back together - the plates may have swelled slightly

I thought this was normal. Always assumed it was due to the increased viscosity of the oil when cold.

see what its like in 1000 miles time..

I didn't soak the plates overnight, no...

On all the bikes I've ever used you can push them around fairly easily in gear with the clutch disengaged when cold, so it just struck me as a bit weird.

It seems fine when riding it (I've done about 300 miles since changing the clutch), but I thought I'd better check to see if it's indicative of a problem.

I'm no expert but have done the plates, springs and basket before. Neutral
Things i'd check/do.
Inspect the clutch slave for leaks.
Bleed the clutch....testride.

Replace new springs with originals (check the old springs are in tolerance) Whilst the cover is off have a look at the basket..might as well make sure the right amount of plates were put back in.
If the basket has notches deeper than a couple of mm the friction plates with their new tangs don't slot back into place so well.

That's me out of ideas...almost.
Maybe pull out the clutch rod and look for any wear.

I think iknow where the problem lies, its the fact youv done only 300 miles in a couple of weeks to fix this you need to swap bike swith me (sv650) then the problem will go.

although i think you may just be too used to how your old clutch used to feel but there doesnt sound like anything to worry about like said abouve give it time to really bed in and report back if theres anything to report that is .

adam.

If its anything like my VTR was then no.

Don't think you should be too worried, you could check to see if anything is leaking or dirty which might cause an issue but i would say it's more than likely normal. Best to ask on a dedicated TL forum with people who have owned a few of them.
