Storing a fuel injected bike.

My Street Triple is going to be put in to winter storage soon to keep it nice and I dont really use it much.

I know normally you drain carbs but what do you do with fuel injectors?

Disconnect the fuel hose going from tank to pump, clamp it off and then run the engine until it dies to empty the pump. Thumbs Up

Take key out, lock garage. Done.

They only inject when its running...so its not really stored. Might be handy to get some injector cleaner/fresh fuel for when you next start it up.. but essentially its like storing a car.. My Astra was stored outside for 3 years, fired into life fine and ran fine... injectors needed nothing Laughing

That's how the manual on my CBF says to do it. I'd have thought old petrol would gum up the mechanisms inside the pump. Thinking

Hi

If you are worried you can buy a fuel additive designed to stop it going off.

Think the main market for the stuff is lawn mowers.

Way we did it on my mates bmw k1000 was to drain the tank completely then put a litre of injector cleaner in and crank it til it smokes. that way injector cleaner sits in the lines, pump, rail and injector heads and doesn't gum it up.

all you have to do to get it running again after is top up with petrol and crank it til it fires too.

Some injector cleaner is very corrosive. Toluene will eat through a plastic container for example.

I go with the park it and forget it viewpoint. Fuel injection systems are sealed so there's no venting and evaporation of lighter elements to create a 'gum' like you get in carbs.

On mine the fuel pump itself has a breather hose going back to the tank. Would that increase the chances of the petrol going nasty in the pump itself?

That's not a breather - it's a return hose, will still be full of fuel.

run the bike till low on fuel and then fill on super unleaded from shell or the like, the high octane and detergents are known to lessen the sludge build up. failing that start every week just to keep all the juices fresh.

I've put some redex in the tank and run it until warm every fortnight. Never had a problem. I don't think 4 months over winter with a good fuel will cause any problems anyway. Just make sure the bike is clean before you store it, your tyres are kept inflated and rotated, get an optimate and put some acf50 over the bike to prevent corrosion.
