Posted: 17:29 - 25 Aug 2011 Post subject: What bikes can you insure for <£200 |
 |
|
I got bored at work and did a few quotes for the bikes i'd like to own.
Did a quote for a VTR SP1, came out at £500, thought it was reasonable.
Did a quote for a Blackbird, came out £580... again fairly reasonable considering I have 3 points.
Then a DRZ400SM, which I would consider a chavs wet dream... came out at £130 FC... and got cheaper with TPFT
Quoting some more supermotos and was getting quotes around £3-400..
So a bike I really fancy is within my £200 limit, what about you? |

There is not a single person on this forum (Nay, in this country) who can tell you what quotes you will get on bikes because of the quotes they got. Everyone gets different quotes for every bike but all we could tell you is what bikes tend towards being cheaper to insure.
To fit the "cheap to insure" bill, generally they need to be:
Naked/bikini faired. (Unless a tourer).
Commuter-orientated.
Tourer-orientated.
Not crashed very often by other people.
Smaller capacity tends towards cheaper insurance for the same type of motorcycle. (I.e. a Ninja 250 will be cheaper to insure than a Ninja 600 [extreme example, I know] etc.)
Those are only a few things insurance companies take into account.
Try looking for bikes like a Hornet, SV650/SV650S, GSX-600F, CBR600F, ST1100, VFR800, XJ600, FZR600/FZR1000, Super Four, Superdreams, supermotos, scooters (like a Turdman) and various others.
It's pretty obvious when you actually put your mind to it, bikes that are not sports bikes, race replicas, sports tourers etc will be cheaper to insure for most people, just search for some bikes you like and see what comes out.
No bike can be guaranteed to be insured for <£200 no matter what. !
Also, Andym, the reason that XJ600 is so cheap is because it's insured on a provisional. That means you can only use it in the presence and in constant radio contact with a qualified instructor. Once you pass your test that will go up.
Hope that helps Paddy! ! ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

£89.22 on a 1998 Ducati 900SS with 5k miles per year TPFT
mind you, i was only quoted £434 for a Maserati 3200GT. Pay £396 comp on a quad cam Alfa Romeo, including European breakdown cover.
33 year old Professional, had both licenses (car and bike) 16 years, no points, no convictions and 1 non fault accident (rear ender) Live in Milton Keynes, so only a so so insurance risk (for a city) |

Well, on the subject of this.
The cheapest quote I even got was FC on a KH 400, came in a £120 I think? 17, no NCB on that one. Bit of a bargain tbh.
My renewal came through today at £1179. 18, 2 years NCB, garaged on my Fazer purely because some woman drove into the back of me and I now have a non fault claim declared lol. (paid £500 ish last year with no accident)
Can't really understand this? ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

The premium for my FZ6 this year was £91, TPFT. Then I got £30 cashback off Swinton. Then I got £27 cashback for buying it through Quidco. So this year I have spent £34.
I'm 27, 2 years NCB. |

If so, bikeinsurer.co.uk ... non fault claims are not insurance premium killers.. trust me on that one |
Yeah, well technically. I'll get the rest of the money on my 18th bday.
I've got one quote of £454 which includes legal cover, ride other bikes, £350 excess and commuting.
About what I paid last year but at least I can ride other bikes now . ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.
