I am pretty new to taking things apart and replacing them but today the bulb that illuminates the speedo has died.

Can I replace these with any type of fitting bulb? I'd like to change the colour of the back lighting anyway.

The bike is a 1998 Honda CB600Y Smile

How specific instructions do you need? It'll be fairly simple, along the lines of:

Arrow Take the front fairings off
Arrow Unplug the clocks
Arrow Remove clocks
Arrow Split the clocks to find the bulb or LED that's gone

If you're really unlucky, the led will be integral to the clocks and not ment to be replaced, like on the 954, if I recall correctly. I double you'll have that problem on a 1996 bike though.

I should have been more specific, I don't need instructions on how to get at it, I wanted to know if anyone knew what sort of bulb I should replace it with? I can't find anything about those bulbs in the owners manual.

might sound silly, but when one of my panel bulbs went I just took it out and went along to my local car shop and asked for 'one of these'

They gave me a pack of 2 Smile

Sorry I seemed to have dodged the question. I don't know for sure, but I'd place 10p on it being a T10/501 bulb. They're in pretty common use, my Daytona 600 used them, as does my GS500.

If you're changing colour, ensure you get a few to play with. Whilst some seem a good idea, sometimes they just don't work on the bike and can make it difficult to actually see the needles.

I changed my Daytona's dash to blue Sick , it was 2003, I swear, all the cool kids were doing it and I could not read a damn thing. Laughing

I can't remember exactly what bulbs they are, but I'm pretty sure they are the same as the position light in the headlamp.

Changing them is easy, you should be able to jut remove the trim panels from around the clocks, and then remove the large rubber bung from the bottom centre of the clocks, revealing a screw that needs to be undone. Then you can lift the base of the clocks out, and slide them downwards. Might be tricky to disconnect the wiring without access to the back of the clocks though...

With regards to what Chriss said;
They're definitely not LEDs, and they are definitely easily replacable Smile

PS. When removing the trim panels around the clocks, don't forget there is a small plastic clip that joins the 2 pieces of trim together; DO NOT BREAK THIS! They're impossible to get replacements for (or atleast I haven't found any the same!, not even david silvers). You can undo the clip by pushing the centre inwards, and they prising the whole thing out with your nails. Once you've removed the clip, you need to reset it so that the central plastic part sticks out of the clip, so that once reinserted you can push the central part inwards to be flush with the head of the clip..

I think that is everything...

Wibbles, this is from a 98 CB600FW workshop manual:

I would be pretty safe in saying it will be the same bulbs.

So one of these should do it:

Capless Instrument / Clock Bulb - 12 Volt 1.7 Watt
