Pre-CBT training?

Hey guys just a quick question, I called up to do my CBT today and was told that I really should do a 3 hour one to one before I took it. Although I am sure this is good and makes the CBT easier is it necessary? I was under the assumption that the CBT was designed to show you how to get confident using gears etc? I can drive and have messed about with bikes years ago, I just wondered if it warrants spending the extra money to do the one to one before the CBT?

up to you really, id never been on a motorbike in my life before my CBT and completed it in 1 day.

I literally just stepped in the door from my CBT. I would say to you do not waste the money.

I haven't ridden a bike in over 25 years (a shitty old Suzuki 120cc ) and apart from a few iffy u-turns and figure 8's I was pretty fine.

The road time is awesome though and thoroughly enjoyable to boot

I did it on a geared 125cc but you could just do it on a twist and go if you want and put that extra tuition money towards a bike for when you pass.

Any type of pre training sounds good in theory but would only suit someone preparing for their Mod 1/2 to gather an idea of competence and finesse and imo pre CBT is somewhat conjectural. It is within itself the most basic of training to gain an insight into your capabilities and development throughout one day. Not only that but most centers should give you all the time you need, whether this is one day or three once you've paid the amount due.

Like Kerr, I went along without having ever been on a bike and was able to complete the day on a geared 125. Some ppl may need another go the following week for the road section, some even need a third session to finally 'click'...it's all about moving as the pace which suits you best.

Some establishments offer an endless cycle of sessions to complete the training once you paid the initial fee. Some like where I went asked for an additional payment if you required another days session, as did a girl who was on her second attempt and was again unsuccessful...she must have spent loads.

The fact they're pushing for pre-cbt training makes me think they're trying to milk as much money out of people who are either nervous towards their first biking experiences or in some really twisted way they belief they're helping ppl. Either way just remember, CBT is designed to walk into without any experience and walk away feeling you're in the position to pursue biking, to then go on in your own time to complete the full license. It is human nature to want to be helped and fully prepared before you sit through any type training/ assessment/ test, my advise is watch youtube vids, read up the basics, and asked questions. What is echoed again and again on these forums for new bikers looking to do the CBT is just to turn up with the hunger to learn and listen. You're already on forums and probably searching for answers, so you're already putting in your own pre-training! look at it like that.

I showed up for my CBT on my 17th birthday requesting to use a geared 125 machine.
Closest thing I'd ridden to a motorbike before this was a push bike.

Started my training at about 10am, finished around 3/4pm.
So long as you've got a decent instructor, pre-training isn't necessary for your CBT - it is "compulsory basic training".
Your instructor should be expecting you to have never ridden a bike before.

Most people get through their CBT in a day easily, with no prior training, although one of my friends had to go back for a second day (free of charge).

Just listen to what the instructor tells you during the CBT and you should be fine. If you want to get ahead of the game a bit, watch a few videos on gearing with a motorbike (if you're after a 125) and also learn a bit about the maintenance of the bike beforehand. But your instructor should go through both of these with you anyway.

There should be no need for pre CBT training as it's a course designed for beginners in the first place. Consequently, unless you've given them reason to believe that you'll need extra training, e.g. learning difficulties or a physical disability (and you don't give that impression in your post) my assumption would have to be that they're either:

* Trying to milk you for more money than you need to be paying.

* Or their instructors are incompetent.

And as a result of this I would take my money to another school in the area if there is one.

Don't get me wrong, not everybody gets given a certificate at the end of their first day, but the vast majority of novices who have completed the course successfully after one day in the five years that I've been conducting CBT's greatly outnumber the one's that don't.

Moreover, at least two of the schools in this area offer a second days training free of charge if you don't complete on the first day.

I had to do this but then found out that what the riding school did was out of order, because the CBT is supposed to get you from zero to basic. And (not sure if this true) if you arent ready in the 'day' they have to provide you additional instruction free. But this was another riding school that told me this. However i personally was glad I had spent the money to do the pre CBT bit.

A pre CBT session can help nervous students.

As most of the reply's have stated CBT is designed to get someone who has never ridden a bike before up to a standard where they are safe enough to be let loose on their own!

It is usually completed in one day. It is up to the individual school as to whether they charge for extra training, but check the small print as a lot of schools charge for the hire of the bike/equipment etc.

Just go for the cbt training and save yourself a few quid, i done mine on a twist and go bought a 125 scooter and had it for 8 months then sold it and bought myself a 125 varadero i have had it about 8 months now and i just passed mod 1 with it and doing mod 2 on friday, as other folk said use the money on something you need for riding like boots,gloves or a helmet.

Find a place local to you that does a 'Get On' free 1 hour session instead and book yourself on it - that's what they're there for!

You could do one of those taster sessions? But imo you probably wont need it. Most people fly through their CBT.
