Posted: 16:57 - 28 Aug 2011 Post subject: CBT done, New bike on finance help? |
 |
|
Literally passed my CBT about a hour ago now!
Felt kinda weird being on the road riding a bike, took 10/15 mins for me to wake up and realise 'Hey, im on a fucking bike..' But really enjoyed it!
Anyways, after speaking to my instructor/some one else re-taking their CBT they suggested going and having a look in local dealership - so i did!
Now, my wage is piss poor and in reality even saving £600-1000 for a second hand bike is a long, long shot. I talked to one of the guys at the dealership and I can get finance aslong as i have a parent on it as well. Good news! He showed me a few bikes, but the one's that really stuck out for me was the Honda CBF/CBR 125 The CBR being just a little too expensive.
They offered for a brand new CBF:
2 years warranty - Parts and labour
Price: £2,420.00
Deposit: £99.00
Amount of Finance: £2,321.00
36 Monthly Payments: £69.36
Total Amount Payable: £2,595.56
APR: 4.9%
^ can't seem to find a better deal than that - everywhere is the same :S
£69 a month, i can cope with that even with my wages
Only problems being,
Do i want to be in debt for the next 3 years?
Is there a better deal? (Im after a 125 bike that i can run about on, and maybe have a lil fun)
Is the after sales service going to be just as good as they say?
Thanks in advice for any help or suggestions
Oh and please dont bullshit me with 'Stop being so young and impatient, just save up and buy some blah blah blah' By the time i did save up, I might as well just do my DAS. I need something sooner, rather than later. ____________________ 2007 YBR 125 (sold), 2011 ER6-N (sold), LHD 1999 GSX750F (sold), ??? ??? |

your money your choice mate....BUT do you think you'll be riding for 3 years on a 125? My advice would be to find a tidy 125 that you could sell for practically what you pay for it ......because you WILL get bored of a 125 & you'll lose nearly a grand when you sell your new bike - even more if you drop it....
...no-one tells me how to spend my money...so as I said...it's up to you! Just enjoy it either way |

^^ thanks for all the quick replies.
I haven't made my mind up, i just wasn't sure if anyone knew of some good deals going on with other bikes/another idea...
Like a mentioned saving for a bike - as much as i would like to isn't really to much of a option. While i have £100/m 'Spare' to pay for this + running costs etc, waiting 9 months to get a second hand bike and then COULD have nothing but problems with it seems a bit disheartening. Not to mention in the long run its cheaper to run a bike than get the bus, and i need to get from A to B without relying on someone/something else for obvious reasons.
The plan is, within the next 2 years to get my A2 out the way once i can afford it. Up until then/after i'm still going to need something to run about on. The warranty is one of the biggest things that appeals to me, and having that piece of mind that if anything goes wrong with it it'l be fixed along with i know no one has ragged or tinkered with it.
The main priority of getting a bike, isn't for the thrills. I understand that i'l get bored of a 125 eventually - but wont it make a bigger bike feel just that much sweeter?
I have a new lid/jacket/gloves/boots, some trousers would be good but servicing/insurance would be even better - i have heard that they sometimes give out some insurance - realistically would that be so?
Does anyone have any suggestions for perhaps some cheaper bikes? I know the dealership does sell second hand, but i never saw any/the guy told me they dont get many 2nd hand 125's altho he could have been just looking for his next commission cheque.
Thanks for the help so far ____________________ 2007 YBR 125 (sold), 2011 ER6-N (sold), LHD 1999 GSX750F (sold), ??? ??? |

It's a tricky one. That's a good APR for that amount of money; you'd get a lot less buying power for the same monthly payment on an unsecured personal loan. But new bikes, and in particular new 125s, are a poor purchase: we have high new prices, and low resale values, which is why so many UK bikes end up being exported to Elbonia.
The thing is, your guarantor will be "jointly and severally" liable, i.e. if you are unable to make the payments, your parent will become fully liable for them.
Given that, you'd be as well seeing if they can just borrow it for you and put cash in your hand. In particular, they'd be better adding that amount to a mortgage, then having you pay them back directly (and them paying down the mortgage as they get the money from you).
That'll let you buy a 3-ish year old 125 which has taken the big depreciation hit, with extra left over for your gear and insurance. You're also better off paying for that up front rather than paying per-month - remember that in most cases you'll be contracting to pay the full year on it, so you'll always end up over-paying even if you want to cancel the policy for any reason.
Oh, and pass your A2 as soon as you can. There's no particular reason that you can't get the theory out of the way, do an intensive bout of self practice and book yourself in early doors for mod 1 and mod 2.
You can make plenty of excuses for not doing it, but there are no really good ones. Definitely don't get caught up in the scramble to pass next summer before the licensing laws change for the worse in January 2013. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

ONLY vehicle I have ever bought brand new was in 1990, a Kawasak AR125; I was a student, at uni, needed wheels, and didn't have two black bank statements to rub together...
Pro's; 'best' wheels you can put under your bum as far as not being thrashed crashed or abused; should provide good couple of years hassle free riding while you need all the help you can get; learning to survive the commuter battle-ground.
Cons; its an effoff lot of money! And you wont own ANY of the bike for perhaps eighteen months or more, as the depreciation mounts up faster than you make payements. In fact, if it was stolen, liable for ALL three years credit charges AND the depreciation; Insurance co likely to pay you out 2/3 bikes show room price and leave you with no bike and trying to agree a repayement plan with the finance co, to cover the short fall.... probably seing you making the same £70 a month payements, for best part of two years till its paid off. Likewise; if you stack it; even insured Fully-Comp; Ins-Co will only give you value of second hand bike, to replace one you stacked, less policy excesses.
THAT is a LOT of risk to take on. But does make you RATHER hyper cautiouse about how you ride and what security you take!
Taking credit, can build your credit rating; useful if in years to come, you want to take out a mortgage or anything. But, default, or have a bank 'fuckup' (I had one on bank loan I took out to buy My VF many years ago; I moved house, and so cancelled all teh standing orders on the account for 'utilities'... bludy clerke cancelled loan order too, and they 'the bank'... DOWH! who I had filled in all the Change Of adress forms, and who were sending me monthly statements on my current and savings account; ended up using a Debt collection agency, who used a detective agency to 'track me down', becouse I did NOT provide them with my new address! Idiots!) Can 'knock' your credit rating! (That one the bank who were sending me bank statements but had to get a debt collegction agencty involved to find out where I had absconded to, actually took out a CCJ against me, without my knowing it, that was a RIGHT PITA when I wanted a mortgage!)
So, pro's and cons......
£99 down and £70 a month? Hmmm.... 12 x 70 = £840, + 100 = best part of £1000, wait another six months and you would have about £1500 in your bank... NOT unfortunately, these days, earning, rather than costing you interest.... which would probably buy you, outright the 18month old bike some-one had bought this week on finance, and was effectively cashing out of.... and own it 'clear' no risk, no more payements, and be best part of £1500 up, rather than £1500 down compared to taking credit....
Financially, it doesn't make MUCH sense...... BUT.... it does make sense.
Question REALLY I would be asking is do I NEED this bike?
In my case, I had no other wheels, and needed transport; it was bike or shank's; so needs-musted..... if its a 'toy' you can live without, that merely justifies a bit of existance saving bus-fares and letting you get about, think hard, and probably say NO.
If you DO dive in though..... whats 'DEAL' will they give you on a CBR?
In for a penny, in for a quid..... which was why I went for Kawasaki's 'Sporty' AR125 at £1400 rather than thier 'commuter' KH125 at £1099...... difference on monthly payements was not that significant, and the AR, I figured, apart from being 'nicer' bike to own, at the end of the two years I took credit over, would be more saleable, for better money. Not SO true, then; more 'sensible' prople wanted KH's, but they also didn't want to pay sensible money for them, where AR, not so sensible, got terribly eager and 'less' sensible buyers eager to part with cash, of which there were far more. Same is probably MORE true of Honda CBR125..... may be worth checking out, the 'total' cost of ownership and comparing two year old second hand prices to see which will more readily sell, and give least depreciation.
BUT.... parental 'cointersignature'..... talk to parents.... DO they want to do that for you? Would THEY lend you 'cash' instead; say £1500 to get second hand bike 'now'; and you pay them back at rate of £70 a month? ZERO interest as far as you are concerned, and less risk on THEM that they'll start having balifs turn up on teh door or THEIR credit rating hammered if you loose your job, or 'something'?
ALWAYS a tough cookie, and finance ALWAYS looks better than it is; but its a necessary evil, and we have to learn to cope with it and use it wisely.... Talk to parents, try and see if you can make it work for you, and could be worth the doing..... if not, other ways to skin a cat.... and ultimately, you could get a second hand Chinese bike in a Box under your bum, for less than down payement and a couple of installements..... not nice biking, but third class biking beats first class walking, and if you dont NEED it as dependable transport, but lets you go play, just the same, better, leaves you cash in hand each month to go do training and tests, possibly even on a school bike, if the chinky thing or old Jap 'classic' is too embarassing.... to get your licence before they change riules and you cant do tests on a 125 except for permenant 125 licence..... could all be good, and better way to go........ rather than a high cost and fancy 125 you are paying MAINLY for the privilidge of being new, and subsidising future owners, NOT using it THAT much, as a 'toy' bike, paying all the credit and depreciation on it for three years, shorting yourself on cash to do training and tests...... so repeat CBTing until its paid for, THEN realising in three years you cant take a test on it, and you are too young to do DAS and get a full licence anyway, and are pretty much 'stuck' with the thing...
OR you change jobs, or get laid off, or or or.....
We cant tell you what to do, its your life, your credit / money, you are pledging.... YOU have to weigh up whether its worth it TO YOU.... but think long and hard, thats all we can ddo, give you food for thought. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Why not look at motorcyclenews.com to get an idea of the second hand market in your area. I have just bought my first big bike and while I could afford a brand new bike, reality is, I am a new rider and I have enough to worry about without worrying about scratching the paint work or worse
Plus I know that it wont be long before I am bored and want something else ____________________ "Light travels faster than the speed of sound, which is why some people appear bright until they speak" |

Personally if I was in your position I would look for a cheap 125 and go from there. Most are only single cylinder engines and very simple to maintain. You've also got a wealth of experience on here to help you with any faults that may occur.
Normally I wouldn't recommend a chinese bike but it's the lesser of 2 evils. Check this out for £300 or best offer on ebay. Tax and MOT

I appreciate all the help, idea's and 'outside insight' to this, The problem is - I simply cannot get a lump sum of money to buy a bike in a timely fashion :/ My parents are still paying off their car/mortgage, and even tho she has a bad credit history - my mum said she would go on the finance with me aslong as i am SURE thats what i want to do.
It's not just to save bus fair, its also that the bus's are very, very un-reliable, i'v had to walk home twice this week, and the buses that have turned up have been at least 20 mins late. I have commitments to my band who practice about 15 miles away on a friends farm. Buses don't even run from there, so getting there/to work/home is an absolute nightmare. I guess it is kind of a toy, as anybody buying a bike knows. But for the most part it IS needed and my parents agree.
I was just having a look at the insurance. A RS 125 for me is around £350 TPO, so i would have thought a CBF would be a fair bit cheaper? Il check that out now.
I wouldn't mind buying something, and doing it up. But I just dont have the cash to invest right now :/ i think in the future as a project, i'l give it a go tho!
As for the CBR, just too much i think...
CBR125R
Price: £3,270.00
Deposit: £1,043.56
Amount of Finance: £2,226.44
42 Monthly Payments: £65.00
Total Amount Payable: £3,773.56
APR: 7.95%
It is a lot of money, and risk. But for the piece of mind, and convenience i think its close to weighing up. Can you usually pay off the rest of the debt before the 36months are up? At least if i had some transport i could be a delivery boy in the evenings for some extra cash
While a shit and sour chinky take out would be a cheap and quick option - for now at least. Would it last long enough for it to be worth the cash? I can see it being a small(er) investment for it to go tits up quick....
My parent's have very kindly said by my 18th (March) They'l have paid of their car and be able to help me out buy a bike. Only thing is, thats a good 6/7 months away (perhaps i am being slightly impatient, but after 6 months relying on buses, i dont think i could put myself through another 6 months of it and survive ) . And all honestly i would rather be able buy/pay off the bike without them being involved with the money side. I appreciate what they are offering, but i have a feeling they would use it against me in the future. Not to mention they'v had a look at the paper's and seen Chinese bikes for £300 and are sure thats what i should get - im surprised as my step dad has his DAS

Not necessarily, they take a lot of things into consideration when giving you a quote and the value of the bike is one of them. If buying new I personally would go with more cover than TPO, if your bike gets nicked you will be paying finance on a vehicle you don't have and won't be able to afford. Give consideration to a higher level of cover.
If I were in your position I think I would go for the brand new bike on finance but see if you can get one with a years free insurance chucked in. I know Yamaha have done deals like that recently and you can pay a small lump sum to go fully comp with them. The only real sticking point would be getting tied into a finance deal for three years. See if there is some kind of penalty for paying it off early if you sell the bike after a couple of years.
Congratulations on getting your CBT though, well done! ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10

I'll give you a piece of mine. If you drop the bike, you're stuffed. If it goes wrong outside the warranty period - or perhaps even inside it - you're stuffed. We've seen some reports of badly put together CBFs (it's made in India) and shoddy dealer support.
Up to you, but stretching yourself to the limit is always risky.
| pl3ppp wrote: | And all honestly i would rather be able buy/pay off the bike without them being involved with the money side. |
Acting as a guarantor means that they're involved. Really, they are, it's not just a token signature.
If you do end up looking at Chinese-branded bikes, I'd stay away from anything offroad styled, I've heard nothing but bad things about them.
IMO, Kymco are your best bet, then the Dihao made commuter bikes, sold as Huoniao, Haotian and Lexmoto Vixen / Arrrow, are the least bad mainland ones, and even they have some "opportunities".
Really though, YBR (carb version) or a CG125 are going to hold their value much better and be less liable to give you trouble. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

If you need transport, then why not consider a 50?
Otherwise, there's stuff available on your doorstep for half the price of what you are considering :-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-NSR-125-R-only-under-10k-miles-/170687041341?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item27bdbd8f3d
Buy it now, £1200.
You're in employment, go and talk to your bank manager. Have a spreadsheet ready of income and outgoings, along with as many payslips you can get your hands on. Show him you've done your homework. Prove you can make the payments.

While they are on the finance as well, the funds will be coming out my account. I appreciate what they are willing to do for me, But i would rather know IM paying the money, not THEM so they cannot use that fact against - they still use things from 7+ years ago
Surely having a 2year warranty is better than a no warranty from a private seller? If i had the money in my pocket, or even within sight i would go and buy a second hand Honda CB/Yamaha SR with out a doubt. It pretty much boils down to this:
1 - Get a bike on finance - whether its new or second hand. Could be that a second hand bike could have more APR and so not make it as viable. While having a bike, I'l be able to make more money and so possibly pay off more of the finance (if that's possible?)
2 - Save and buy a bike. That means tho for a year (give or take a few months) I am without transport. My commute to work isn't too far, 20 minute bus journey, or 10/15 mins on a motorbike i reckon. Most of it is two lane town roads (40mph) that are sheltered, the only thing that would put me off is ice/freezing conditions.

My 'Best' advice... you wont like it.
YOU DONT MISS WHAT YOU ENT GOT
You simply fantacise what it might be like..... believe me, things are ALWAYS better in fantacies.....
Your not quite so pretty girlfreind, who grumbles you never talk to her, while cutting you off mid sentence to answer a meaningless txt from her best mate, that grumbles you never do anything together, when you spent ALL saturday with her shopping for shoes, and being 'educated' that actually there IS a difference between 'burgandy' and 'Dark Red', and who complains "Not Now! My Parents are Upstairs"..... is, in a Fantacy, a drop dead gorgeouse, completely undemanding nymphette......
Bikes are not much different.
Look great in the magazines; you watchj the films and they take your breath away, and you think 'I GOTTA get me one of them!"
When you do.... like a girlfreind... gives you a few odd moments of shear extacy..... few moments that it makes you smile..... a lot of the time you don't think about it much at all..... and then you have the 'reality' when it wont start in the morning, or it needs new tyres, or the indicators are playing up.... and you REALLY know that this shit doesn't happen in the movies, apart from comedy farces, where curiously its actually 'funny'......
So stick with the bus, and enjoy the fantacies a little longer.....
£70 a month JUST what it would cost you for a bike, at £350 PA, TPO, insurance is going to be at LEAST £30 a month, on a £2.5K brand new bike, Fully Comp to cover the risk of it being dropped or nicked..... at LEAST double that......
So, sat the bus, enjoying your fantacies.... you are saving MINIMUM £100 per month for the small inconvenience of a bus being late.
I KNOW busses are a nightmare; when I was a kid, (NO, you BASTARDS! They WEREN'T drawn by fucking HORSES! ) Lived in rural district; catchment area for my school 30miles accross; getting about was a right pain in the arse, relying on rare, inconvenient public transport, lifts or shanks' pony. BUT amazing how we got about... and quite remarkeable how far you can get on a humble push bike.......
Maybe your first 'month' HP=Equivilency; you could buy a push bike? Got one already? Then your sorted, aren't you?
Six months; you said you weren't so keen on the foul weather idea...... £600..... come March, with THAT money in your pocket, and whatever 18th Birthday brings... THEN go check out the options again.
If nothing else, you have a bigger deposit to stick down on a bike on finance, and will have shown your Mum & Dad, and proved to yourself, you can meet the payements..... more still, bigger deposit means you'll be ahead on the payements game, and might get a better deal.
OR close enough on, being able to get 2nd hand bike.
Though; with 3rd Directive licence laws coming up to hammer younger riders; PERSONALLY.... I'd be thinking about getting that licence cracked.
Ride the bus, use push-bike; use 'motorbike-money' to book and take Theory/hazard test; get that one under your belt; then do some rider training on School bike, like you did your CBT, each month, for the 'Riding Feeling', and if you CAN book tests on School bike, and get THEM out of the way ASAP.....
You're looking at about £500 for a rider training course, on school bike.... so you could have that DONE and dusted by April next year, and not be restricted to a 125 by licence.
And over 18, credit agreement / bank loan, whether in your name or counter signed with or without help from parents; you COULD go looking for a 2nd hand bike on credit...... dont HAVE to buy new.... and with a licence, dont HAVE to be a mere 125.....
Hows THAT effect the fantacy.......
Sat on the bus fantacising pottering down the lanes on a CBF125.... of blasting down them on a GS500 or DRZ450, or something?
Sod it... fantacy... you can make it a bludy Super-Blackbird if you want.... but imminently, you could make 500 reality.... IF you are kanny about the way you go about it.
I think; committing yourself to a credit deal; all up; is a lot of risk; and biggest is, even if nothing elce goes tits up, you'll be struggling so much JUST to keep up the payements on the bike, AND the Insurance, you wont do training or tests... you wont even THINK about them until about four months before your CBT is about to expire..... and you'll be kicking yourself you've missed opportunity to get licence on 125, and can only get a 125 licence on your CBF, or will have to struggle even HARDER to find the money to do training and tests DAS style on a 500 to only get 'half' a licence, that keeps you ON a 500, not just two years but until you have held 500 licence two years or turn 24, and do test AGAIN, and again, expensive DAS style.......
LITTLE bit of patience up front; Maybe taking a chance on a 2nd hand Chinese-Fake-Away... 'Just' to get you in the saddle.... even if you have to chuck it in a skip in a years time....... £300 for a Chinky bike you chuck away is a LOT less than the £1000, £100 Down and twelve £70's would be to STILL not own a CBF, that you'd be in negitive equity with and would probably have to find best part of £500 to pay off credit agreement, on top of 2nd hand price of bike.....
BUT... SOME-ONE has to buy 'New' 125's or there wouldn't be any second hand ones out there for any-one elce......
And there is the old addage, fool and his money are soon parted....
Ultimately your call..... BUT I think every-one is saying, that JUST becouse it gives 'instant' gratification, the long term cost is a lot more than 'just' the high buy price & credit charges.......
SIX MONTHS.....
Do a reverse cooling of period; its winter, and horrible biking weather coming up anyway; use it; save the aproximate payements; prove you can afford it, stick some dosh in the bank; if you dont do traing with it; or use it to stick bigger deposit down to shorten payement period, or lower pmonthlies; there to pay for training & tests, and not squeeze you SO much the bike is a burden not a joy IF you still go new on credit.
My suggestion, but you have to go with what you think is best ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
