Would be interested to see what got people into biking.

Some people have a biking family and it just seems natural.

Others meet biker friends and catch the bug.

Some see bikers on TV and think that lokos cool.

Others think, I need my own transport........

So what got you into biking?

I've always wanted one since I was a kid, but it's only recently that I've been in a position to get one (or perhaps justify one?).

I've known bikers for years, my closest friends are bikers, my bird is a biker.... I've always surrounded myself with them, and now i am one.

Got a scooter, and coming towards the end of march i thought --this has been a very enjoyable year! I may well look into getting a 125cc bike"

After enjoying that time i think i shall be a biker for many years to come!! even when i have enough cash for my porsche boxster

A couple of years ago i'd have never got on a bike. The old man bought one at the beginning of the year, I sat on it & started it and I wanted one. Passed my test in june.

Although I think there is more than one specific reason why I started biking.. for example for the price of a small hatchback car, you can get supercar performance, don't like trafic jams.. the list goes on.

...I needed cheap, reliable transportation. There's nothing like being able to buy the pinncale of the genre for a mere pittance. There aren't many cars for under $50,000 that excite me the way my $8,100 crotch accessory does. Then, you factor in the respectable gas mileage and the cheap insurance and it's a no-brainer.

I got one because for cheap commuting and it was something that had always apealed to me.

Found it was actually quite fun, so have gone for 'funner' bikes as I work a mile away from my house Smile.

Well, my little brother (he's now at least 6 inches taller than me and outweighs me by over 75lbs) got a Yam DT125R when he was 17 for transport. I had a go and enjoyed it, but was a student and couldn't afford anything. Then I went to uni and met up with a few other bikers and started going pillion on rides with them on a Sunday. That was what got me hooked, then I left, got a proper job, and found I could now afford to buy a bike!!

Plus there's a 6 year waiting list for the car park at work, but no list for a bike space, and I don't have to pay £30 a month for the privilege. And the rest, as they say, is history....

Always liked them, had a few scramblers in my younger years then when I was 16 I wanted to get mobile. Wouldn't mind a car and just use the bike for evening blasts but gives me independance as well as fun.

I was 16. I got a ped. I turned 17 and got a 125.

Didn't really consider cars until I had my full car licence, and that was just because my brother happened to get a new car and pass the family slug on to me.

I know as a kid in the back of my parents car i always sat up to watch the bikes that went past much to my parents horror and disgust.

I had a go on the back of McJam's bike and I think I was hooked pretty much straight away. After a few more goes as pillion I decided that I wanted a go for myself, so I booked my CBT to see how I'd get on. After that, I desparetely wanted my own bike, just to play with at weekends etc. And now I have my NSR Very Happy . I'm hoping to do my theory before the end of this year, and my test next year, depending on if I'm ready.

My parents weren't that surprised when I bought my bike, and seemed to quite like it when I showed them. I'm not sure if I'll ever give up my car completely, but it's damn nice knowing I have spare transport if I need it!

For me I started biking due to me starting work in the middle on Manchester City Centre, it was taking me 4 hours a day to commute on public transport.

So in November 2001 I took my CBT and purchased a 50cc Scooter (being 16 thats all I could have) and I enjoyed riding that so much I got myself into proper bikes and passed my test and the rest they say is history!

Same story as Robby, started on a ped and worked my way up!

I initially got the ped to get me too and from work and to friends etc, not pleasant times people laughed and now I laugh at them stuck in 5 miles of traffic on the local motorway Wink.

I got this particular bike because my mum didn't want me to get the cheaper SRAD (although she hates me biking she'd rather I got the one she prefered the look of, go figure!).

Mate suggested it. Up 'till then I hadn't really thought about ever owning a bike, but the idea grabbed me as something that I really actually wanted to try. Got my CBT done and bought a 125, suddenly I had my own transport and a quite nifty toy to boot. It was a great adventure.

Besides, have you seen the cost of car insurance when you're 17 Shocked

Grew up with bikes; dad had a load, he only switched to a car when I came along as it was going to get cramped with mum on the pillion and my two sisters in the sidecar. He still kept a Bantam for commuting once he got the car though.

I've always been a minimalist at heart, and the simplicity of a bike appeals in a big way. I'm also keen on camping, and a bike suits the "getting away from it all" feeling, which you can't fully get in a car.

Then there's the commuting aspect; you can't beat a bike for A to B, and it would take quite a large incident to make a dent in your commute time.

Finally, there's nothing like a good blat to get rid of the mental cobwebs Smile

My dad was a (and is again) a biker back when Norton and Triumph were still the big boys and always loved them. He introduced my mum to them. Then we moved and he sold both his and my mums. At 10, he taught me about bikes and how they worked and how to identify engine types and whatnot. Was hooked since then and only 12 years later did I realise that having some form of transport may be a good idea.

Whenever i drive a car i just feel bored. Even when i'm cold and wet I still love the feeling riding gives you. Plus, only takes me 2 minutes to get into town and park up instead of 20 in the car Confused .

Plus, i was going through one of those "why am i in this situation at my age?/early mid-life crisis" moods and thought "hell, i've always wanted to ride a bike...lets do it"

I wanted to be free...

My brother had a bike...always...I remember he had a dark red Kawasaki...big thing..I was about 8..he took me on the back..liked it !! Thumbs Up Surprised

My Mum never let me on it again...

The next year he came off it...his helmet shattered...a piece stuck in the back of his skull...
My Mum made me swear never to get a bike...

She died when I was 12 years old...
and... I am sorry Mum...but I wanted the freedom to go where I wanted, and cars are not my thing !...
I need to be able to escape the house...the drudgery of stuff....
I thought of getting a bike...just one night..sat here...
YEAH !..I am gonna do my CBT.
Thumbs Up

Did it..hard work, yes...passed, yes....
bought bike...

Never looked back !

My test is probably in about a month..hope I pass....
but no biggie...

Then I want a 400/500 I think...restricted...

I love the freedom of my bike Blue Bettie....
I am not silly on it...I just take off whenever I feel like life is closing in on me...then it is just me..Bettie and the road...
I can do what I like...

ask me 6 months ago and I was adamant about getting a car, my mate bought an Aprilia SR50 and I decided I really wanted a moped, found a cheap ped about 2 weeks before my birthday for £490, done my CBT on my bithday and now I am happy and I want a GS500F after I pass my test hopefully next year.

Also Car insurance is way too expensive.

It all started during a holiday to Austria - the fantastic winding Alps passes, being stuck in a coach while numerous groups of bikes came storming past, and then stopping off at a local village and watching a 30 bike convoy pass through - that noise, the admiring stares, my first biker nod - that started it all. Then I got home, and what else was on the TV, but the final WSB race of 2002, Troy Bayliss v Colin Edwards at Imola - and the rest is history...
