I've just bought the missus an ER6N.

It's a 2007 model on a 58 plate. It's only done just under 8000 miles but they include winter commuting so some paintwork is a bit challenged but I can touch up that.

Any issues to check with these bikes other than the normal consumables?

Apparently the exhaust is prone to cracking, either the headers or just before the box. I know mine was.

Also welds cracking where the engine is mounted on the frame, although that's supposed to be earlier models and it's not happened on mine.

On the 06 version there was this possible frame issue - not sure if any of the other models were affected;

https://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~shanetp/Index_files/Possible%20Frame%20Issue.pdf

might be worth a check

Also heard of a similar problem with the weld splitting/cracking where the sidestand is.

It's had a replacement exhaust already Doug. I presume they fixed the problem rather than just replacing the exhaust so it won't happen again.

Depends who did it, plenty of places (including dealers) wouldn't have, just replaced the pipe/box.

Mine just got welded, so it could easily happen again. Especially with all the vibration mine seems to be making these days.

The frame issues were sorted by the 2007 model year.

Stick coils can corrode and cause problems.

Yeah, the coil caps are a bit of a shit design. Mine's had one done in 22k and the exhaust. The frame's fine, though.

The suspension i found to be poor, dont push it on anything where there may be a bump...

Edit: and by that i mean in performance terms, if you try to ride it like a sports bike it will bite...

front exhaust is stainless and so is the silencer, the stupid little bit that goes between the two is mild steel and rots

so I got a local welder to add a couple of inches of stainless to the branch, cost about £45 for welding and £20 for new gaskets

Hi,

I love my ER and I am also an all year round commuter.

My faults with the bike are the total lack of any underseat storage. I have also had the downpipes replaced under warranty (Snapped just before they join the exhaust as per other posts).

Also my exhaust has died, I had to get a replacement myself as the warranty period had expired.

The only thing I could moan about was the sxxte tyres fitted as standard, they were some cheap Dunlops (I think) and they were really dangerous, i.e. loosing it in the rain going in a straight line. I swapped them for BT 21s, now on BT23s.

One other issue I had was on the 7.5K service replacing the spark plugs, there was another warranty claim, the coils were exposed to the elements and snapped taking them out. Kawasaki hadn't bothered to pack any grease round them and they had just rotted away.

Have thought about replacing my ER6 for a newer one, but probably hang on to it for a bit longer.

Didn't one win 150+ road races in NI a couple of years ago on standard suspension?

It's a bit bumpy and cheap on the front, but it's not that bad. And you can certainly give it some. I've been doing for 4 years. It's just a matter of riding it right (not to suggest that you weren't riding correctly, just that one can definitely go some on one).

Smile

The rear shock on mine is much bouncier than my Street Triple. Feels like a space hopper.

This.

Happened to a lad on a track day yesterday and sounded as rough as a badgers arse!

Nice bikes otherwise

Gosh you must ride some bikes with good handling.

When I got my ER6, I realised how bad my Z750 suspension was!! I just thought my ER6 had great suspension.

I've ended up fitting a Hagon to the Z, something I wouldn't consider on the ER6.

Well, my other bike's a 2009 R1, so yes, it's got much better suspension... Smile

But the front shocks on the ER aren't great. They're just not particularly bad, either.

I had an ER6F, found the seat and riding position very uncomfortable
for long journey's but that's a personal thing : need to test ride the
bike yourself!

I enjoyed the engine and power delivery, ride was ok (for commuting
at least) and the bike never failed to start over 3 years and 17k
miles being used in all weathers. The bike is narrow which is great for
filtering and low speed fuelling is smooth which is also good for
commuting/filtering. No fuel guage on er6f(n?) slightly annoying but
can just use trip and warning light.

Problems I had were rusty exhaust : header pipes replaced under
warranty. Rusty ignition coil sticks and spark plugs : replaced half
price as it was recognised as a design weakness I think. So if riding
through winter I'd recommend a can of ACF50.

Have you thought about an aftermarket seat?

I didn't just thought, I bought..

I purchased a bagster custom gel seat which made things a little
better but the overall ergonomics didn't suit me so the bike was sold.
The Triumph ST I have now is much better in this regard for me.
Still plenty of people are happy with the ER6 and for short journeys
it was ok for me, just didn't like going over 50miles or so..
