Good morning.

While cleaning and going over the bike I found an electrical connection under the clutch lever that was not connected. It is two pin oblong connector, plug in type.

Does anyone know what this is for.
I do not wat to plug it in without knowing what it does.
Thanks.

RIGHT I have found out that it is a CLUTCH switch, but what does it DO?

Mark

The clutch switch tells the bike if the clutch is pulled in or not. When you pull the lever, it presses on a micro switch.

Many bikes require the clutch to be pulled in to be started, rather, the switch to be pressed to be started. Often they're by passed to enable single finger starting of the bike.

See if your bike will start, if it will with it unplugged then it probably won't be causing any issues. Some bikes, some Suzuki bikes for example, have a neutral map that is run when the clutch is pulled in. Again, the bike uses the switch to tell if the clutch is pulled in.

Thanks my man.
That was well explained...as I understood what you were saying.

I will leave it unpluggeed as it dosen't seem to have any ill effects on the bike. Jut put some electrical tape round the open end.

Thanks for your help.

You may not be able to start the bike in gear with the clutch lever pulled in, not a problem if you don't do that anyway, but handy if you stall in traffic.

It'll be there to stop the engine being started with the bike in gear and the clutch engaged thus shooting into the parked car in front of you. As long as you remember not to do that it'll be fine.

Sidestand switch shouldn't allow the bike to start in gear regardless of clutch position, unless that's been disabled too. Wink

The sidestand switch looks after the sidestand. Has nowt to do with the gearbox.

As said you won't be able to start it in gear with the clutch pulled in now. V Handy if you stall or are just lazy.

Might do on his bike. None of my bikes with a side stand switch will start when the side stand is down, unless they are in neutral.

Though you have got me thinking about my 'blade now. I'll try it later. Laughing

Reading this I was thinking, Why would you start the bike in gear but thinking about it, I have done this a few times.

Sometimes if I am just quickly moving the bike and I dont give enough power and stall it i just press the button.

Sometimes I leave the bike in gear (on a steep hill) and I just start her up in gear.

Sometimes (this one is rare but happened the other day)
Put the bike in gear and then remember I need to start the engine.

I normally start the bike, put helmet / gloves on, jump on, ride off.
But my pillion was piss assing about soo much with the intercom system I cut the engine, then when I jumped on the bike I automatically put the bike in gear then remembered to press start

The sidestand switch on the ER6F stops the bike engine running if an attempt to put the sidestand whilst in gear, ergo stop the engine being started also.
engine can be started whilst in neutral and sidestand down.
Clutch switch allows bike to be started in gear with clutch in and sidestand UP.

I went and tested.

GS500e with a clutch switch. If the clutch is out, it won't start on the button.
Arrow clutch in, in gear, sidestand down. Won't start.
Arrow clutch in, in gear, sidestand up. Starts.

Fireblade, no clutch switch.
Arrow In gear, stand down, won't start.
Arrow In neutral, stand down, starts.

This means when I fire my bike up, it'll be impossible to shoot the bike forward into anything without me being on it ready to go. Unless the neutral light lies to me.
