Well, encountered my first diesel patch on a roundabout this morning.

The roads weren't wet, so couldn't see it at all to be honest. Just as well I was only tootling round the roundabout (as usual!), because even with only a slight lean on, the back wheel tried to disappear from underneath me.

Felt it going, so quickly slapped my foot down and pushed up quickly to keep the bike upright.

Thankfully, it was just a little wobble, but it definitely gave me the willies.

Then the next roundabout just further down the road, there must've been more, as when pulling out from standstill, the rear wheel slipped a bit again (it's only a piddly 125 don't forget, so not like grabbing a handful of throttle is going to unleash hell Laughing ).

Wasn't much fun to be honest, and rode the rest of the 14 miles to work very cautiously at every corner. Embarassed

If you do go through a diesel patch, does it usually take long for it to wear off your tyres?

Get used to it mate, diesel is a lot more common than it should be - see it most mornings on the way in.

There are usually little clues that the roundabout ahead is going to be covered in it, normally spots of diesel on the approach or a known lorry route near a fuel station etc. Keep your wits about you and you can ride around most of them - if you have to ride over it, keep the speed low and the bike as upright as possible.

As for how long it stays on your tyre - not long at all. If you go through a normal sized patch (i.e. not a diesel puddle) it only takes a couple of metres of clean dry road to get your traction back. Deep spills of diesel take a bit longer as do those encountered when the road is wet, go steady and gradually increase the amount of lean angle you use. In real terms - I would forget about it within a few hundred metres of normal riding.

Not fun atall. I crashed round a corner on diesel during heavy rain, on the way to my mod 1 test. I put it down to lack of experience or seeing tell tale signs, but Still passed the mod 1, but was a bit nervous. Soon as i got home, sat down for like an hour. Then couldnt walk. Severly bruised my left side and sprained my ankle. Fun times! Very Happy

These lorry-driving fcukers need prison sentences when caught, they're maiming and killing people with their scumbag moron selfishness. God help one if I ever catch him red-handed.
