Riding without Tax to the Post Office to get Tax. Legal?

Hi All.

Done loads of searching and I know you can ride it to an MOT without it being taxed, true? But my girlfriend has just passed her bike test and wants to ride her Insured & MOT'd bike to the post office to buy the tax disc.

Question is can she do this legally?

Specifically, no it's not legal, but you'd have to run into the worst type of miserable copper who would elect to ticket you on the way to your most local post office whilst carrying the appropriate forms and payment for the tax disc.

No exemption allowing it so not legal although probably something that she will get away with. Heard stories of people who have been done for stopping to get tax on the way back from an MOT (the rules on travelling to and from an MOT are open to a bit of interpretation as to what is reasonable).

no.
police will only report to dvla but they do wait outside mot stations to catch you on the way home.
better to walk to post office or tax online.
you can also get done for not displaying tax disc but as i have had it stolen before (and found the culpret and the police did nothing) i leave mine in a safe place.

The reason she wants to go to posties is because then she gets the disc straight away and you can display it. Even buying on line you can still get bent over and rammed up the brown pipe for not displaying even when you've got confirmation in your pocket! In fairness this would be one massive bell of a cop but still

Many moons ago I was stopped for riding to the Post Office on a bike that was insured and MOT`d.
The tax had expired the day before, but I still received a summons five and a half month after the event , even though I was able to produce all of the relevant paperwork at the actual time of the stop.
Ten minutes after I was stopped the bike was wearing it`s new tax disc.

Luckly for me the Magistrate threw it out. "no case to answer" some technicality?

No tax = void insurance.

I spent 2.5hrs driving back from peterborough the other day praying I didn't get nabbed by the Feds as the lady in the post office wouldnt accept a email of insurance purchase as proof of insurance, seems it has to be on paper to be deemed real. So yeah, void insurance will get your hoop a sound flogging in court, so only do it if you've no other option, such as being 80 miles away from home.

If you're not taxed, you're not allowed on the road. If you're not allowed on the road when you have an accident, wouldn't that void your insurance? Not fact - just asking.

Makes sense to me that if you are not legally supposed to be on the road, how can your insurance be valid? Same as not having a road worthy vehicle I.e no MOT.

Then you'll get given the old " policeman would have to be very bored". Well policing must be a very dull job then because unless you picked your lips firmly to their arseholes I seriously doubt you'd talk your way out of it " I was gonna get tax officer - honest!".

Have you got the old disc? If you have, if you do it online, you're old disc is valid till your new one comes in the post so I believe. If the coppers stopped you and did a check just explain
