Hi,

I'm a total virgin to these sites so go easy on me folks. Not sure if I'm even posting in the right section. Shocked

Here goes, I am in need of a new helmet, haven't got endless amounts of cash, but my son showed me a helmet called Reevu RV MSX1 - I've posted the link further down the page. Any constructive advice and opinions are really appreciated. Very Happy

Cheers

I cant comment on that helmet, but when buying a helmet you need to go to a shop and try on every helmet and find the one which fits you best. Dont buy one online without first making sure it fits you well.

Thanks for your advice, I've had a few on-line disasters, great when it goes well but a bloody pain in your exhaust when it goes wrong.

Any particular makes I should avoid? Apart from fit, what else am I looking for?

Currently have a Caberg coming to the end of it's life and found it a bit on the large side.

Every helmet sold in the UK will (claim to) meet the ECE 22.05 safety standard (technically there's also a BSI standard that could be used, but the European one is the one used in practice). Essentially you're buying a plastic bucket full of polystyrene. If you want to splash out more, you get a carbon fibre bucket, but either way, it's the 50p worth of polystyrene packing material that protects you.

You can have a look at the SHARP ratings if you like. There's some inevitable dispute over the methodology, and the tested impact speed is quite low (although higher than the ECE 22.05 minimum), but it does give you something to go on.

Unfortunately, the Reevo isn't listed. This doesn't say anything about it - SHARP helmets are bought at retail, so it's up to SHARP to buy some for testing and they just haven't done so yet.

It really does come down to fit and comfort, and there's no substitute for trying on a whole load. It's not just size, it's head versus helmet shape that matters.

This. You can spend as much or as little as you want on a helmet but the main thing is the fit. Make sure it fits you comfortably enough to wear for long periods and tight enough that it doesnt move about when you turn your head.

Talk to the guys in the shop if you are unsure. They know what they are doing when it comes to helmet fitting.

Spending 600 quid on a lid that doesnt fit right is more dangerous than spending £50 on one that does.

I've bought a HJC IS Max helmet in the last couple of months, and I'm really quite pleased with it - it has

chin guard to keep wind out
opening chinbar
internal sun visor which is easy to use with gloves/while riding
slot to put a bluetooth unit in

Best of all, it fitted my melon really really well, compared to some of the other more expensive units I tried.

It was £139 in Hein Gericke. They have a shit load of helmets to try and I found the staff in my local branch very helpful and they didn't in any way try to push me towards the more expensive units!

Thumbs Up

Thanks Bazza, wondered if you managed to look at the Reevu helmet, difficult to explain but has a sort of rear view mirror just above eye level enabling the rider to see behind without checking mirrors or shoulder check. hence posting on biking news, I'm interested in riders views as to the safety and/or suitability of it.

If you have a Hein Gericke shop (or similar) near to you, go there and try on lots of different lids.
Different brands, even claiming to be the same size, will have a different fit.

for example, I apparently have a Duchinni or AGV branded head.
However a similar lid from Shoei or Arai won't fit me.

If it comes down to it, find a lid and a size that feels comfortable, then go online and search for the most competitive price Wink

I have an IS-Max too. Great helmet, I've found. Love the sun visor bit which is really good if you're a glasses wearer like me.

I completely agree, Hein Gericke seem to really know what they're talking about, and were happy to hold my glasses while i tried on pretty much all of their lids. They also held the helmet while I moved my head around inside, this helped check the size.

Try to make sure it doesn't pinch anywhere, and keep in mind the internal layers will compress over the first few weeks/months of use, so get some as tight as you can handle. Also make sure the view from inside is adequate, and that you can move your head freely.

FYI, I ended up with a Nolan it was about £200, but they took 10% off as I brought some new trousers and a jacket. Thumbs Up
