So what do people recommend? Do either effect insurance and will the police (especially here in NI) actually check any of it?
Thanks

I've just run a couple of quotes through a comparison site to check how alpha dot vs datatag affects the premium. They both reduce the average quote by £3.46. So from an insurance point of view they both offer the same reduction in premium, although, in my case, not by enough to return the investment. That's a quote for my bike TPF&T at £74.12 a year. If your premiums are higher, you will probably get a bigger reduction.

As for their overall performance and which is better, I have zero experience of either so cannot comment.

I bought a bike which was data tagged, had it registered to me. A while later I crashed it and sold the good pieces on eBay, all data tagged. This was about four years ago.

To this day, I've not had a single piece returned nor have I been contacted regarding it.

I believe there is no reason to get it unless it pays for itself in reduced insurance premiums.

I recently installed the Datatag kit on my new Vespa. I didn't really notice any reductions on my insurance, and apart from it being slightly assured the parts of the bike are tagged, I think the visible 'Datatag' stickers/transfers are a good deterrent.

Yeah, I have just obtained an insurance quote with and without data tag and there was no difference. Interestingly they actually asked whether data tag or not. Prob no difference because of lacl of ncb etc though. They all seem to have there pluses. Alphadot are doing a £1/month subscription which I like!! Up to 3 kits. Trying to find out which one is best for NI swell. No point in getting a system if the local police don't have the scanners!!

Thats what I gather from their site and a bit of googling.

The IT department use the SmartWater to tag the equipment at work.

I borrowed a few stickers and attached one to my pushbike frame and considered doing the same on my Hornet but tbh I doubt a sticker will deter a thief.

To quote my bike instructor: "That little sticker won't do shit. The only way to stop someone determined stealing your bike is to chain it to a couple of hungry rottweilers behind a 6ft electric fence."

Smartwater is useful on bikes if you mark all the valuable parts of the bike separately such as the rims, forks and such, that way if the bike is nicked it can be traced back to you even if it's broken for parts which is especially important if you have expensive ancilliaries such as Ohlins suspension or Dymag rims.

It does have a decent affect on insurance too I've found.

When I insured my FZ1, for some reason they thought it was datatagged. When I failed to provide proof they tried to add about 25 quid onto my policy until they listened to the calls again and realised I'd never made such a claim.

So I guess that by being apparently datatagged I saved about 25 quid.

I actually ended up going for Alphadot as it was a bit cheaper and they do the same job.

Ive gone for Alphadot. £1/month for 3 kits i.e. one for home, car and bike. Seems like a good deal to me! No fees for changing address/selling stuff on etc.

Anyone want to explain the actual way it works?
Does Alphadot charge per month instead of a one off?
I looked at Datatag and it looks like it's a one off payment and I found This Place for £22.99 but not sure if you also need to pay a monthly fee.

Possibly, but thats stuff in the house, van etc covered aswell. Min subscription id 12 months so only £12. Not a lot really. Looking at it as an experiment.

Datatag here. Like others have said, I don't think it'll come into effect until the bike has been found.

Data Tag etches a serial number onto the parts. If your bike gets stolen and broken for parts, should the police happen to find a part with that number on, it can be returned to you.

Alpha dot has a similar idea, except I believe the police need a special scanner to be able to read the dot that is applied to the part.

Has anyone here (or know someone) managed to retrieve bits of their bike which has the smartwater/alphadot treatment after it has been stolen?
