ok so my CRF450 is almost 8 years old (03 model) and since its been ragged around a track and spends most of its mine in high revs and in the air i think i should get a hole engine rebuild on it. I dont know anyone that specialized in engine rebuilding so im asking if you guys know of any shop or whatever who will do it for me (as i have no clue)

thanks

A workshop at a motocross track I would have thought.

I'd fully expect your Phil Setons, and Ray Stringers of this world to do it too of course, but someone that specialised in motocross lump rebuilds would be a better bet. Why not ask at the club you race with?

i dont know if they specialise in it but armstrongs engineers in newcastle westgate road do rebuilds.
Any race engineers should be able to do it.

Also why not ask honda for a list of their recommended people since you'll probably want a honda trained person doing such an important job.

Also consider just buying a new engine/ or one with little miles on it, since the cost of rebuilding an engine by pros will be high too.

Thing is though if you buy an engine you still dont know 100% what the internals are like.

Much better off getting your own rebuilt by someone decent, that way you know its a good 'un.

ill have to ask the owners of the track as there isn't a mechanic that works there.

most shops that deal with road bikes dont touch motocross bikes ( i have no idea why ) ive tryed going to about 4 different motorbike shops and they all say that.

and im more want the top end rebuilt as the gears and such are fine

I know a bloke up my way (Worcs) who does it, but obviously thats a fair way from you.

If you get stuck though i guess you could get it couriered to him (quite a lot of his work arrives that way)

There is nothing in the CRF engine that is differant to a normal engine. It is just the tolerances are much finer.Things like the piston skirt to liner measurement is much tighter than that of a road bike.Getting the best valve to valve seat width just right (0.7mm for inlet/1mm for exhaust) can be critical for good flow and heat dissipation.Piston ring end gap.Camshaft end float.Valve shim adjustment.Valve spring installed height.Side play on the con-rod.Big-end and main bearing play.Spark plug indexing.Carb wear and replacement parts.

On a well prepared CRF450 engine you could get 60bhp.But it would cost an arm and a leg and have no warranty at the end of the day.

What about the chassis. There would be no point in having a 60bhp engine if all of the chassis bearings are worn out.

Why do you want to rebuild it? Is it noisy or down on compression?

If the answer is no then I would question spending all that money on something that doesn't really need to be done but then I am a tightarse.

If you've maintained it properly with frequent oil changes it should be fine.

I agree with this.

If its just the top end you're worried about, do a compression check. anything less than about 100psi and you can justify doing a rebuild. Any more than that and you won't achieve anything apart from making a whole in your wallet Thumbs Up
