"Legal cover" doesn't mean anything in particular - you have to read exactly what you're being offered from each insurer.
Don't pay for "legal cover" that essentially just means that they'll pass on claims against a 3rd party to ambulance chasing no-win-no-fee solicitors, because they'll do that anyway. If you have a legitimate claim to make against someone then you'll have no trouble finding a bunch of shysters yourself.
And in the result of a claim being made against you, your insurer already has a vested interest in putting blame on the other party or negotiating the amount of the claim down.
So I'm not really sure what your chumrade thinks he's bought for his "legal cover" premium. If it's an agreed sum of money that he controls and can choose to pay to solicitors to pursue a quixotic claim where nobody else will touch it on a no-win-no-fee basis, then great, but again, read the small print, not the headline. What he believes that he's bought and what he'll actually receive may be only tenuously related. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
