Consider this a general heads up....something extra to check on all bikes. Bearing in mind Honda and Suzuki have had their frame and engine casings 'history'.

There have been +20 similar occurrences in the ST range, and other models too. A very small percentage i'm sure.....Thought i'd done my homework on this bike...Wouldn't of put me off..just would've replaced the bolt with something better/bigger.

The ST2 is honestly an excellent bike in all other regards...apart from the reg/rec placement....and the crappy headlight....and the heavy standard clutch....and it's quite slow by modern standards.....and ugly if viewed head on. Mr. Green

Hi, i've also posted this on other forums.

This is what i think happened.
The bike has a full service history it's a 2000 ST2 imported by Baines Racing of Silverstone.
I'm it's 4th owner with 27k when i bought it last year. Done 10k.

Bike had full luggage with (full rear preload), but even with tankbag it was below the recommended kgs. Rider 13st and pillion 10st. (Rider and pillion actually lighter)
Last week whilst entering Cadwell Park (british superbike race) it bottomed out once. I'd seen the other bikes having to slow for the bump and as it was onto a grass section i slowed right down too...slow walking pace. Wasn't a bang..more a hard tap. Didn't think about it.

We rode home and since then i've ridden it everyday. Sometimes 2up but no luggage.
Just given it a clean and popped off the rubber stopper. Engine bolt had sheared off and was dirty.
Trying not to think about what could've happened.

Things can break..things can be poorly maintained or not checked. My bike wasn't abused and all bolts are torqued correctly...well the ones that can be reached have.

I've contacted a local Ducati Dealer and passed on the fault.
As i mentioned in my 1st post. I don't expect anything to come off it other than an addon in someone's spreadsheet if at all.

I'm not willing to pay daft money for a replacement, so can somebody give me the dimensions and type. 10mm diameter but not 100% sure of length and type etc....Thankyou.

Sometimes, only a cup of tea is the answer.

Shocked

Can you get the rest out from behind or is it jammed in the engine casing?

I've left it in it's shed to have a good long think about what its done....Also i need to improv an engine support, then it'll pop through with a drift. I hope.

Overtightened possibly but the pattern suggests exceeding shear strength. That kind of bolt head requires no washer

Information on other forums suggest it did exceed shear strength. After 2001 Ducati increased the bolt diameter by 2mm.....

[edit]

Quote:
The rear engine bolt has been known to stress and fatigue over time and if not checked can shear or lead to engine case cracking, both with dire consequences.

Some early warning may be gained if the torque is checked regularly (at every service). If the bolt has lost torque then it could be a sign that it has fatigued.

From 2001 onwards, Ducati has increased the bolt size from 10mm to 12mm. Time is yet to tell whether this has solved the problem.

As far as replacements go, Nichol's Manufacturing sell strengthened
replacement bolts at https://nicholsmfg.com/. (Other sources?)

Thanks to Duncan Sargeant for the above piece.

$100 for a bolt...ha-ha.

When i last had to take the fairings off i checked all the bolts i could reach apart from the axle nuts, caliper bolts and fork pinch bolts. The others were fine. Some are marked with paint...i'll be checking those too.
