Strength of steel tube?

Need to make some internal spacers for my Mini-pit wheels.
12mm axles, to go between the bearings, inside the hub.

Is 15mm OD steel tube (12mm ID) going to have a thick enough wall (1.5mm) to be strong enough as internal wheels spacers?
The spindle wont be going much tighter than about 50nm.

Ben, do you know what type of steel it is?

Also did you buy it from a steel company or picked up somewhere else? If it's a steel company they should have a data sheet for it.

Hi Nick,

The info I have is:

15MM OD X 12MM ID 316 STAINLESS STEEL TUBE X 500MM.

That is all really.
I've bought it anyway, as I need 4 small lengths, to reduce my fork leg axle holes down to 12mm for my front axle (From 15mm),
But I was wondering if I can kill 2 birds with one stone, and use the remaining to make up a couple of inner hub spacers to sit between the bearings.

Using my imagination I would say probably, if they fit right and aren't too long because a spacer isn't much of a load bearing part.

Yes it will work especially if the bolt is a good fit. Steel would be better than stainless and thicker wall would have less tendency to crumple at the end. One thing to consider is the size of the hole in the hub that it passes through. If say you have a 15mm OD spacer tube in a hub with a 30mm though-hole, when you remove the wheel you might find the spacer drops out past where you can get the spindle back through it. To prevent this a couple of discs should be attached to the spacer to keep it somewhat central.

I have three meter-lengths of heavy walled ally tube here that would make nice wheel hub spacers if you need some.

Ah nice one Pete!

I needed this stuff anyway to reduce the fork and swing arm eyelets to 12mm (from 15mm).
The hole in the hub is only about 20mm diameter anyway.
