I have got hold of a dr600 old thumper which is missing its stator and as its the 1st bike iv had a bottom end to put back together its all new to me soo.

behind the stator cover should i have a rotor/flywheel then the stator spins inside this which then has a pickup close by ?

does this sound right as theres loads of words cropping up.

flywheel/rotor

magneto/stator/windings

are they just differnt terms people use and do i have the basics right ?

To be pedantic the stator (stat-ic) is the bit of the generator that does not move, it consists of coils of wire (and so may get called windings/magneto) and is fixed to the engine. Then the rotor (rotates) near it and it that bit that carries the magnets, generally the rotor is also a heavy lump of metal that also acts as the bike's mechanical flywheel and is usually called such.

The ignition pickup on a bike of that age is probably* a separate thing again that sits very near to the rotor/flywheel. It's also usually the job of the rotor carry something (my guess would be an obvious pip on it's circumference somewhere) that will cause the ignition to fire at the right time as it passes very close to the pickup thus the need for correct alignment.

So coils of wire = magneto, coils, windings, stator
Thing that spins around = rotor, flywheel
Pickup = fixed thing that detects a certain point in the rotation of the rotor for the purposes of ignition timing

*Note that there is a small danger, depending on the type of ignition used, that the pickup is just one of the many coils that make up the stator, so may not appear as a separate part.

So it sounds like you may be missing your stator, rotor or perhaps both Smile
