Just wondering if anyone can tell the difference in performance between the two. I usually buy Texaco or BP, but had to fill up at Morrisons recently and haven't noticed any difference in the running of the bike.

Is it just cleaner fuel from big names?

There are only a handful of importers to the UK apparently. So they all get their fuel from pretty much the same sources. Just that the supermarkets can run tighter margins because they can make it back on food they sell.

Personally I use Shell because I have one of their cards and they're the same price as the supermarkets around here anyway.

I've not noticed much difference with the bike, but the Shell Fuel Save stuff has given marginally better economy in the car.

Nearest garage is a Shell and it's the same price as Tesco so I tend to use branded more. The rest of the time if I'm out, I'll fill at the nearest place that I see, brand loyalty or quality issues don't enter my head.

As far as I am aware it is the same stuff possibly with different additives.

I use fuel from various places and have never noticed any difference from any petrol station.

I buy fuel from wherever I am going. The prices are all the same and it makes no difference to me.

We've got a shell that's always the cheapest around here so I use that mostly.

Haven't touched Supermarket fuel since the silicone incident or whatever it was as I don't trust them.

Same here.

I remember (way back in the early 80s, I think) a Volvo salesman - at a dealership attached to an Esso garage - telling my mother that you should use petrol from the big suppliers, because it had better detergents in it. "That's why supermarket petrol is cheaper," he said, confidently.

It's rubbish, a complete red herring.

I think it's a common misconception, a bit like the belief that premium fuel is automatically better.

Sainsburys buy their fuel from BP. They often sell it cheaper than BP as they bulk buy and sell at no proffit, hence why the filling stations are like mini supermarkets.

The only time I've noticed a difference with fuels is in my old car (Evo 8MR) which was mapped to 400bhp on Optimax/ V-power. If you ran anything else, I'd get a bit of det, especially if it was cold.

But never noticed any difference between standard fuels whether bought from a supermarket or garage. I buy from Shell because it's the cheapest on the way to/from work!

I haven't used Shell fuel for about 25 years and I'm unlikely to do so ever again. Back in the eighties Shell introduced an all singing, all dancing fuel called ''Formula Shell.'' It contained additives that turned out to be extremely harmful to certain engines (mine being one of them) and it was quietly dropped after a while. There wasn't a lot of press coverage about the debacle (funny that) but I for one will not forgive or forget ''Formula Shell.''

I lived around Portsmouth at the time and not sure if it was just local or not but I remember a hell of a lot of press coverage about it (from memory, lots of Vauxhalls with wrecked heads).

All the best
