Ok, its time I updated you all with my latest experiences of cheap and nasty chinese motorcycles...
If you remember I bought a second hand Baotian Speedy 50cc scooter, 3 years old, 10 000 kms, reasonably tidy...
.... well 1 000kms later I have my first problem.. and what a shocker it is! Earlier this year a major outlet serviced the bike and replaced the drive belt. One would expect 2 or 3 years of life from this..... only it failed today after only 1500kms! Stripping down the variator ready to change the belt revealed some that the variator was abused last time it was stripped, removal of the nut apparantly being done with the help of a hammer and chisel! The Variator itself is worthless scrap, mangled by the previous removal....
So now Ive had to fork out £70 in spares to replace what the garage seemingly damaged..
I would love to confront the garage however I have no evidence against them as it was the previous owner who had the bike serviced there and I have no proof that it was they that damaged the variator Sad
Other than that the bikes great :o

I too am part of the Chinese Army Laughing
Wrote off my 50cc scooter. Bought myself a Chinese 125cc geared bike. It has its downsides, but, so far I've been lucky with an apparently notorious make! Cool

Cost me £700.
Cheaper than the £1,000 average for Jap 125's, which're made in China or India anyway; so, not really Jap 125's... Rolling Eyes

To be honest Ive probably gone a little over the top with the bits I've ordered - I maybe could get away with just a new belt and variator cage, maybe £40 worth, but Ive decided to replace a few other related parts whilst I've got it disassembled just to be on the safe side... I ordered the bits from CMPO on monday night, got an e-mail from them yesterday confirming they had been dispatched by 1st class mail and may be with me today....... pretty good service I think Smile

They're made in China/India, by Chinese/Indian people, from Chinese/Indian parts. The point is that Chinese and Indians are perfectly capable of making decent motorcycles.

If you'd like to argue that they can only do so when a grown-up from a superior nation like Japan is watching over them, go ahead. It's the argument that Hitler would have made. Whistle

A car made is a rolls royce factory is made in Britain using British and German parts. Now it one of the technicians were to go home and make a car in his shed using bits he'd made himself it'd still be british designed and made, but it'd likely be a heap of shit.
Nationality has nothing to do with it, it's standards and quality control. The japs are established designers and manufacturers who what quality control, test their bikes and care about their reputation.
The chinese bikes are made to the lowest quality possible for maximum proffit. Read the MCN lately and you'd have seen the test they did between a CBR125, RS125 and chinky 125. The chink bike was brand new yet didn't make it through the test without blowing up!

Sukida SK125-5 "Patriot".
What it lacks in Chinese quality - I mean, Rolling Eyes Japanese quality, it makes up in having been dirt cheap to buy. Needs a brighter headlamp and a larger front sprocket, and the dials are pretty slow (Wondering if I can replace them with something more reactive!) but, it gets me around. Smile

Sad My little Chinese 50cc ped is no longer alive, after trying to mate with a verge.
Ironically, a friend of mine went through three mainstream peds throughout the life of mine, so, I see no evidence that Japanese small-engined bikes are any better. Wink And none of them crashed.

Thumbs up to the sprocket change, the FMI engines like them.

Not quite getting your argument. Is anyone in China making bikes in their sheds? Their factories are bigger than the Japanese ones. Confused

Was that print only? I can't see anything in the online version back to March, although they did test CBR125 vs R125 vs Derbi GPR125 in June.

Any chance you could dig it up, I'd like to see what "chink" bike they tested them against. They're not all the same, any more than the engine in the GPZ 305 is representative of Japanese manufacturing. Wink

It was in no way a comment about factory size, it was intended to illustration that nationality of workers and country of origin wasn't the deciding factor in quality, motivation was. The chinese company bikes are currently made by people who are trying to make high volume low quality bikes with little or no quality control. My mate bought a 4 stroke dirt bike (nob thought he could de-restrict it) and the things that went wrong with that was laughable. Every bulb in it blew every few weeks, the fuel tap fell of the fuel tank, the exhaust fell off due to sheered low quality bolts, the brake caliper leaked fluid all the time, the rear brake drum lasted about 500 miles, all the lugs snapped off the bodywork. Everything it was made out of was weak and brittle, if it didn't snap itself it'd snap the second you touched it.

That article was in print over 3 issues but only had a passing mention in the last issue. The bikes they used were all bought for about £1500 and were an old RS125 that was quite high milage, an old CBR125, and a brand new Lexmoto CBR copy, so an XTR125? They were all taking the piss out of the RS saying it would be ragged and would blow up, but it didn't. So it came top, the CBR second and the Lexmoto blew up.

Good to know. Thumbs Up

At the end of the day, they're as good as you look after them. The only problem I can point out with my bike currently is a sticky clutch in the mornings; but stick it in gear, haul on the front brake, pull in the clutch and start her up, and after a clunk as the clutch lets go, its fine for the rest of the day. Smile That's just personal experience though.

I also took it on the A-road from Paignton back to Exeter at night once. Bike was on its toes at 60-ish all the way apart from a few bursts at 40. And it's still fine today. Very Happy

People do have problems with them; but a lot of the time its down to the simple problem that, people buy them cheap and have no respect for them because It's cheap. If neglected, I could see them falling apart. But all my Chinese bikes have been fine.

Again with lumping all "the" Chinese branded bikes in together. That doesn't strike you as perhaps a little ignorant, in the non-judgemental sense of the word?

Yes, there are bad ones, plenty of them. I wouldn't touch any of the offroad-stylees, I've never heard a good story about them.

But bad experiences don't invalidate good ones, any more than the opposite is true.

Ah, thanks. Well, it's a fair comparison (although it's £1270 OTR new), since the XTR is a pretend-a-like CBR. It's got the same old CG 125 cloned pushrod lump as most other Chinese branded bikes though, which is not generally the weak point if treated well. I have to wonder, did they rag it solidly from brand new? I can't imagine any bike enjoying that.

If you stay away from the themed Chinese-branded bikes and stick to the commuters, there's not much to go wrong with them, and what does go wrong is fairly easily and cheaply sorted. It's still a gamble, and a used Japanese or European branded bike is a far more sensible choice, but they're not all inevitably awful.

Most of the chinese companies are very new and often don't last long. Jialing is the only real exception to this as i believe they are state owned and have at least some interest in making working bikes rather than creating giant kinder egg toys that look like motorbikes.

Laughing Whoops. Cool
I kid. Mr. Green It gets ragged a lot, but runs out of breath quickly. Neutral Think the bike was probably designed for someone heavier than I!

That reminds me, I meant to ask~
is it simple enough to transplant some after-market analogue dials onto a Chinese bike? Y'know, are the fixtures usually the same from bike to bike?

Can you name some that have vanished recently?
