Would someone be able to tell me the order of the HT leads to the plugs please for an XJ600 diversion as I'm not sure that my ones are in the correct order, the only reason I thought that was due to two plug caps having right angles and others having 45 degree angles and they don't match up.

Thanks

on the XJ600 pre-diversion the order was 1243 left to right sat on the bike.

edit: service manual taken from the sticky on this forum:https://www.mediafire.com/?3i42jjavmyz

states it is also a 1-2-4-3 firing order, problably the same as the XJ600 pre-diversion which is a wasted spark with one coil doing the outer 2 cylinders and one could doing the inner 2.

Edit 2, and the ht caps don't matter per se, as you can unscrew them and swap them around.

If it's running ok, someone has probably swapped the caps over on the leads. All you need to do is swap over the two which are wrong, they just un-screw off the leads, but be sure to put the leads back on the correct plug.

TBH, if it's running, you'd be best ff leaving it alone. You might find that once removed they are a devil to get back on if the screw is loose in the cap.

It runs well but I'm changing the plugs too often, I wasn't sure if it might be something to do with the leads being in the wrong order, but I'm thinking probably not now.

I thought it could be that there might be water getting into the system through the petrol cap (as there's often a puddle under the filler cap after rain) and breaking the plugs as when a plug goes the bike is usually low on fuel so I thought if water gets in when fuel's low there would be a bigger ratio of water than there normally is. Just a theory.

But I got some new plugs which are CR8E rather than CR9E to see if they make any difference.

(It's a XJ400 divvy but most things will be the same as a 600)

Cheers for the replies.

Hi

If the HT leads are on the wrong way round then the engine would (at best) just about manage to run on 2 cylinders.

Water causes problems in the carb, long before it gets to the engine. It is heavier than petrol so sits in the bottom of the carb which is where the main jet gets fuel from. So as you open the throttle it starts to try to run on water and fails miserably.

There should be a drain hole around the fuel filler cap to allow water to escape without getting into the actual petrol tank. This might be blocked (it also might be fairly well hidden).

Plugs should last well. Biggest problem with the fueling on the Divvy is the utterly useless vacuum fuel pump, where it you fail to get onto reserve quickly enough to avoid the engine stopping you can kill the battery before it has pumped through enough fuel to start the engine again.

All the best

Keith

I don't know, that's why I posted, I thought it could short the plugs out or something, I don't know a great deal about plugs or mechanics so it was a guess.

But thanks Keith, that's useful to know.

No, what I mean is - what is making you say they are 'broke'. Are they physically broken or are they just not sparking?
