As per title - does tape damage paint work?


I'm planning a few winter mods (bodges) that involves things potentially rubbing paintwork, to stop this I plan on covering the contact areas with tape.

What tapes are ok for bodywork, I don't give a shit what it looks like when the bodges are in place but I'd rather not remove them in a few months time to find the adhesive has dissolved my paintwork and fairings.

Anyone had duct tape, electrical tape etc etc on painted plastic parts for a prolonged period of time and had the paint underneath look ok on removal?

This is a cheap bodge at the end of the day so if I can avoid buying sheets of vinyl or similar I would prefer not to.


On another note, anyone know where to get really really cheap flexible cutting boards Smile ?

Electrical's fine. Duct/gaffa is an epic pain in the balls to remove.

Never had any tape affect the paintwork, after all there's a load of lacquer to get through first. Unless you've got a ropey aftermarket paint job anyway.

Duct tape seems to be too sticky - I had some on my bodywork for protecting the paint and it pulled a chip of paint off with it. To get the rest off I dabbed the adhesive part with white spirit whilst pulling it off and that seemed to work.

I've had electrical tape on before and that didn't pull paint off, but it doesn't seem as sticky.

Depends on how long you want to spend peeling the stuff off come spring, really.

Yay ikea Crying or Very sad , 10 mile maze of flatpack furniture and lost husbands. Thank you kind miss, think I'll go with electrical tape.

Electrical tape is NOT fine. The previous owner had some on the sachs and it took the paint off with it.

Ill take some pics for you tomorrow.

As it'll be a few months before I begin my bodging i might stick a few test pieces on some hidden parts of my fairing, see what it looks like at a later date.

Gaffa tape should be OK: it's not the same as duct tape, and is designed specifically to remove more easily with less residue. Just be sure that you're getting proper gaffa (gaffer, gaff) tape - if you're paying duct tape prices, you're almost certainly getting duct tape.

I've used masking tape with sellotape on top of it and its always pealed of fine with no harm even to (my) dodgy paint jobs!

This I know. But I was generalising as most people call that thick thread-strengthened stuff duct/duck/gaffa/gaffer somewhat interchangeably.

Would that be sticky enough to stay on for 4 months though? It wont be holding anything down, just acting as a scratch stopper between my fairing and a bit of plastic that might move around a small amount (concerned that grit will go between the two parts and scratch the shit out of it).




Also, cheers roger, didn't even realise gaffer and duct tape were different.


EDIT: I've run out of Karma, will karma everyone when I get some more.
