Hey there all,
just a quick question (again, the nsr 125 RY),
i have a working combination with the spare engine top end and current bottom end but want to rebuild the spare bottom end.

What am I likely to need when rebuilding the bottom end as I would like to order the most obvious parts (big end bearings, seals and everything worth replacing) so when the engine is apart I can check all the internals for service limits and hopefully I wont need much so with any luck I'll be able to throw it together again sharpish.

Also does anyone know how much it would cost to get a crank checked/ballanced/trued? Is it neccisary?

The spare engine was neglected for a while and the big end bearings are shot but it did run pretty smooth Razz

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Best regards

The biggest cost is the labour to take it all to bits and put it all back again. Seals and bearings should be fine if you can do them.

Well the plan is to strip the engine down and get a bike shop to aid in the splitting of the cases (shouldnt cost much as the place in luton offered to do it for free, just a bit far to travel from here Neutral), will have a stab at making a castle nut tool so I can strip it down as far as possible before I take it to them Smile

Asside the clutch/flywheel and splitting of the cases what other costs other than parts are there? The crank for example? Does this need to be sent off or is it just a good idea?

Best regards

Hi

Crank will need to be split to fit a new big end bearing. Pressing it apart and back together and truing it up is best left to someone who has the experience and tools (and knows what to hit with a soft hammer).

All the best

If the bearings are gone then you'll probably need to send the crank off yes. On 125cc engines, sometimes the local backstreet garage can rebuild cranks for you because you don't need a very big press to assemble the crank components.

However, I'd probably still send it off to Applebee or someone, because they'll know how to true and balance it properly. I'm not sure if you'll have to send them the main bearings or what have you... I don't know if they need to be pressed onto the ends of the crank. Someone with a bit more knowledge will probably be along in a minute to answer that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
