Did a (admittedly small) search on here but didnt notice anyone explaining what the deal with small plates is - I was planning to get a tail tidy for the beemer, but doesn't really make sense with a large plate - a quick Google search suggests the small ones are illigal - anyone know? If they are not illigal - where the &/#&% can I order one from the dvla site - seems to only mention personalized plates on there and i couldn't care less what the number is.

Quite fancy this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-S1000RR-2010-2011-TAIL-TIDY-FENDER-ELIMINATOR-/150658788602?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2313f6acfa

Buy a smaller one on ebay... just give them the reg and order one... its like £7.

In terms of illegal... mostly dependant on a copper.. standard is 9x7?? some people use 7x5..

Some people like shereen think a rizle sized plate is satisfactory Wink Laughing

I have a smaller number plate sitting in my garage, cos I took it off the bike.
Why ? because 9-out-10 times when I went out when that was on my bike I`d get followed or stopped Crying or Very sad .
I never got prosecuted, but it just was`nt worth the hassle Sad

Ive always had smaller plates, not 'piss-take' small but 8x6, 7x5 etc. I have one that came with the RSV that must be 4x3, its tiny. Currently got a full size sail on it for the MOT and I havent been arsed to take it back off.

Just to add Ive never been stopped on any bike for anything, including loud exhausts and small plates. Must just be where I live (or how I ride Laughing ).

Some of the Ebay ones, or the showplates website have a 'create-a-plate' program where you can choose your size, design, slogan and prob put a BMW logo on if you wanted. Cool

A smaller-than-regulation plate is always illegal, regardless of which copper or MoT station you go to. You will find different levels of discretion so may get away with it, but you should know it's illegal and be ready for the consequences.

The regulations do not stipulate a plate size, they mandate a character size and spacing; if you add it all up the minimum plate size for a normal reg number is around 7"x9", but if you have a lot of narrow characters (or 1 or I) the plate can be legally narrower. If you had "A1" it could be tiny!

And the the DVLA don't sell plates, just numbers. Google will find you a gazillion plate suppliers, some legal, some not.

Generally around these parts at least the deal is don't take the piss and you'll be left alone.

So no one liners basically.

Had as small as 7 x 5s on my bikes with smaller font and never had any issues. Even when teamed up with loud cans.

The worst I've ever had as a one line plate with a silly font, and offensively loud pipes on a firestorm. Took the plate off after getting a fine for it, although they didn't mention the pipes.

Had an 8x6 on the GPZ, and currently got a 7x5 on the Bandit

I've never been stopped or questioned about the smaller plates... although I still have the original 9x7's ready in the garage when it comes to MOT time

Thanks for all the reply's guys - I now see how it works in this country, you can pretty much do what you want - and face the consequences if there are any ... unlike where I'm from (Denmark) where the state produces all plates and you will get a fine instantly if your plate is not standard.

I think 7 x 5 with a GB flag on it will look just fine with a tail tidy Thumbs Up

Laughing

You fail to mention that JD's plate is ACTUALLY the size of a rizla....

Its .....................................................................................

literally ^ that ^ big. Shocked

BUT I have decided to get a 2 lined plate now. Just to avoid the heart sinking feeling I get whenever I see a rozzer car.
