Just a quick one:

I work at 2 locations; A and B which are less than 3 miles apart.

Would my current SDP and commuting insurance not cover me to go from A to B once, twice a day or as and when required? Or would I need to get a buisness insurance added on?

When going between the 2 sites no work is carried, no items delivered or purchases made. The bike carries me from one to the other as I am needed.

What do you think?

The killer question is 'are you being paid when you travel between the two?'. I teach in various schools and am only paid for contact time. According to a LOT of research done by my colleagues over the years, I can get round on SDP and commuting, but only because I am not being paid unless I am with the students.

Hope that helps. Thumbs Up

I only need to commute between these 2 sites so would be getting paid.

"Commuting" definition usually specifies "to a single place of work".

Agreed, you'll have to actually read your T&Cs. Don't take our word for it.

If your are traveling to work either at the start/end of your working day. You might be OK, despite the usual commuting to a single place of work. If you are going between the 2 in work time then you wont be covered.

But of course don't take what we say. Talk to your insurer. Thumbs Up

In that case most insurers won't cover under commuting, but as said by others, check with your insurance company. If they are funny about it, shop around, but make sure you are clear about the situation. They'll let you know what is needed.

Something else to remember - if you're being paid while travelling between two workplaces, and it's in the middle of the day (i.e. not going to/from your house), then while it will probably count as business travel on your insurance, you might be able to claim it off your tax as business mileage - current HMRC rate is 24p/mile for motorbikes.

So even if you have to pay a bit to get business cover added to your insurance, you could end up getting as much or more knocked off your income tax...

(I'm not an accountant, so don't take my word for it, check up before you file a claim for a tax refund, etc...)

Speak to the insurer to check what it would cost to add Business Use – Class 1.

I had to add that to my insurance a few years ago when I started to regularly visit different sites and customers. I was often in pool cars covered by the company’s insurance, but sometimes took my bike, particularly if going into London.

You’ll probably find it costs next to nothing to add. I think mine was about an extra £20 the first year I put it on and that was to cover three bikes including a FireBlade. Insurance has skyrocketed in the last two or three years so it may be a bit more now, but I think in your situation it would be safer to have it. All it would take is one SMIDSY between the locations to let the insurance company wriggle their way out of covering you.
