I just did an oil change at 5k miles (from new) on my GZ125. Looking at the manual though, it says to change the oil and filter every 600 miles. That can't be right, can it?

The very first oil change should be @ 600 or so, and then you should follow the "normal" service interval which will probably be every 5k or so (or every 12 months).

I see -- so when it talks about the 600 mile interval, that probably means the first 600 miles, rather than every 600? That makes more sense...

(I bought it at 3k miles, so hopefully that's already been done.)

That is correct Smile

Have you got a service book with the bike, and if so has it been stamped?

Yes, but I don't have it with me right now -- IIRC it was stamped for 500 miles (which I imagine was probably the first service), and again at 1000 miles.

TBH a 125 only carries around a litre of oil and can give it a really hard time being pegged out to the max most of the time.

If your serious about keeping the bike then I'd do the oil change yourself and change it every 1000 miles or year, whichever comes sooner.

A litre of supermarket SL spec 10w40 will cost you a couple of quid and 20 minutes of your time. It's the best way to keep an engine healthy.

The service intervals on 125s are normally pretty short, but not usually that short. Normal 125 interval is every 1000-2000 miles.

First would be at 600 or so, then every 1500 or so after that. If your manual DOES say every 600 I would be a tad surprised but I'd also be inclined to stick to it. Not exactly expensive, cheap supermarket oil and buy a load of filters in one go.
