Hi,

I have a YBR 125 with a slow puncture on the rear tyre.

Managed to appropriate a new tyre from a friend, but now I come to changing them....

Not really confident of trying to do it myself, so phoned my local dealer who want 0.75hrs labour, or £45+vat, to do the job.

This seems insane to me, I could buy a tyre AND have it fitted to a car for that!!

Am I right here or are bike tyres just expensive to change?

That's mental. Run the wheel and tyre down to a tyre fitters, like Kwik Fit or similar, and one of the guys will probably do it for the price of a 4 pack.

I would, but I don't have alternative transport to get the wheel there, and being a motorbike that means removing chains and stuff... I would have no idea where to start to be honest!!!

Although, there is a tyre place within walking distance... I guess I could just undo bolts until something comes out Smile

Have you got a centre stand on the bike?

You can change the tyre yourself, you will need the following tools.

Spanners to remove the rear wheel (original bike toolkit will do it)
A valve core remover (some valve caps have one built in)
Two or three decent tyre levers
tyre soap (washing up liquid if you have to but better to use tyre soap)
a compressor or a ratchet strap, 20 pence and a garage airline.

I did a YBR not too long ago.

Thanks, I think I will attempt this!!!

Getting the wheel off is the bit that seems like it is complex to me...

It's a tubeless tyre. You need to blast the bead onto the rim using a compressor.

A garage airline isn't man enough for the job (footpumps make the tyre laugh at you). So I put the strap round the outside of the tyre and ratcheted it till the bead was touching the rim all round and used the local garage airline (20p) to blow the bead onto the tyre. I'd never done it before so was pleasantly surprised when it worked. Compressor is easier though.

If the op doesn't know how to take the wheel off they have no chance of changing the tyre themselves. Not to mention the tools they don't have.

If its a slow puncture i assume it's ridable now? Just find a local place that does bike tyres and ride it there. Let them remove and refit the wheel. Typical price for a tyre fitting including valve and balance is £10 to a loose wheel, £15-20 ride in ride out.
