I won't go into too much detail here and bore you all but basically my best mate has turned into a NOB.

I've known and been friends with this guy since I was 13 and we've been really good friends for years. In 2004 I moved away from Wales in order to take a job in Bristol and although the distance made it a bit more tricky we still saw plenty of each other. He married in 2006 and thats when the trouble started, he would never contact me and everytime he arranged to go out he would stand me up. His marrage broke up 2 years later and I was there for him, doing what friends do.

I kind of expected things to get better after that and for a while they did, he then met a another woman and the same shit started again. Split up and again like a mug I was there for him. During this time he arranged trips to Alton Towers and Isle of Wight and stood me up a day away from going and I had to go the the Isle of Wight on my own.

Anyway this year we planned to do the Crumball Rally for charity together. This involves driving a banger 2500 miles across Europe and back. I bought the car etc and he has paid half for everything. But now with days left till we leave he has gone missing in action, he won't answer his phone or text. I have raised over £700 for charity and I can't compete with 1 driver due to the entrance conditions Evil or Very Mad Oh and he owes me £200 for various car things.

My Mrs wants to kill him and I want to know is it time to f*ck him off. I know I should but we've known each other for so long it's difficult. Getting another driver will be difficult due to it being in the week and it being 5 days long.

Some people you just have to accept for who they are and not expect too much of them.

Maybe he thinks you are coming on to him in quite a gay way and is just trying to let you down gently?
Seriously get your Mrs to co-drive.

Mates who aren't there for you aren't mates....they're just acquaintances you've known a long time.

Your mate, sounds like many many many men across the land. They are ones who think with their dicks. Once they are in a relationship - they cannot under any circumstances maintain friendships / relationships with any other human being apart from the one servicing his needs.

They cannot be fixed, they won't ever see their reoccurring pattern.

The deal here is, you need to be aware of this, and never ever get into the position of needing to rely on them for anything. So you have him as a friend as and when it's good for him. Easy to deal with, just don't invest any real time into him

Or you can sack him off and find someone who is happy to share their time, and will contact you and visit you when they are in/out of a relationship...basically be a real friend. Thumbs Up

I'm prefering the sacking off option at the moment, I've made myself look like enough of a mug over the years.

Problem was he seemed so up for this that I actually believed he may have changed, should have seen the warning signs having to prep the engine/car myself etc and organise the sponsors etc.

I guess if he values his friends as much as a Sanya 125 then good luck to him as I won't be partaking.

People change tbh....

Many of my great mates from my teenage years changed beyond recognition. If he owes you £200 then try get it back, but not too hard as you can merely put it down to the price you paid to get rid of somebody bad in your life... i.e. its cheap.

Come on, spot the pattern. You're his booty call. When there's nothing else going on, he's all yours, but you're always going to be the support act. Kerb him.

You can never tell what goes on with people.
Maybe he got arrested or maybe his phone got run over/washed in the pocket of his jeans.
*shrug*
Maybe he's lyin in a ditch somewhere, his bike wheel still spinning and exhaust smoking ... who knows.

Or he could just be avoiding your calls.

I'd love to do one of them, I keep trying to talk people into doing one, but they're all "Meh" Sad ... only I am useless at mechanickery so I would have to be just a co-driver: I'm good at the driving part, and even not bad at the navigating part ... I'm just rubbish at fixing things, otherwise I'd go on my own Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I have developed the tactic of burning people off after one too many infringements.

Did it recently to a guy I'd been quite close to for a month or two. But he was telling me too much gossip about some 'enemies' of mine (so it was obviously going the other way too), was taking the piss with bills/drugs/my stuff, and had started to litter conversation with very barbed comments and general wind me up. After he tea-leafed something (small) from my house, that was it.

Burnt off. Don't pick up phone, ignore texts, and the next time I saw him I just told him he was a cock and to go rot somewhere else. No chance of explanation, no weaselling, nothing. Life is too short. I have no obligation to tolerate any idiot.

Seems now like everyone else is doing it to him now too. Maybe he'll learn.

Seems like it's time to do it to your flakey idiot too.

Best move.

Life really is too short, and its kind of a weight off your shoulders to realise you reall don't have to suffer fools for any period of time. You only have your own arse to kick later on, for putting up with their crap, and letting them affect your life for too long.

And thats the funny thing, that once one person does it, everybody else starts going "Yeah s/he is a bit of a prick" or at least suddenly grow the bollocks to commit themselves to one side of the fence or other.

Just blank him for now, until he makes the effort that you deserve in rtn, don't agree to any meets beyond a few hours lunch or what not. Then take it from there, he's defo reached the nearly fucked off stage. Idea

On the other side of the coin, I've got a couple of long term mates I try avoid quite often. Always arranging stuff and getting arsey when you say no, getting arsey that you're busy with a woman, getting arsey that you're busy with other mates, busy with work etc.

Its far too clingy for me, mates not partners.

I advise manning up.

It's probably the first time this year we've done something for longer than a day. I've got my own family life so we meet up infrequently enough for it to be fun.

If I'd manned up he'd have been sharkbait years ago Thumbs Up
