I'm looking for ideas/recommendations for a decent U-lock (AKA D-lock) for my bike that doesn't cost really silly money, as i find the Almax 3 is just too much hassle for work use etc as it requires me cart around an extra bag. U-locks simply slot through the pillion grab rail, much better! (ideally i'd be able to use disc locks like the xena XX10/XX14, but the bike i use tend to have drum brakes so that's a no-go).

Something with an integrated alarm would be all the better if it doesn't sacrifice decent physical security with poor design.

I did some research on d locks for my pushbike and the one that seemed to come out on top is the one i got, a kryptonite evolution 4. You can get them off ebay for around £30 and are heavy but not too heavy to carry around. I think there was a slightly better new york model or something but the extra price wasn't justified.

Be careful are there are some shockingly bad ones out there, and not just the cheap ones.

Not sure i'd want to trust my motorbike security to a d lock alone though.

Is the grab rail easy to unbolt/cut?

Kind of defies the point of having a good lock if it is locked to an easy to remove or easy to cut (i.e. aluminium) part of the bike.

I assume he means to cart it round, not to actually secure it.

The big problem with d-locks is that you won't find a strong one (i.e. kyrptonite new york etc) big enough to lock a motorbike up with.

The longer they are the easier they are to break.

A chain will wrap round the grab rail as well as the d lock will

If you can break a Xena U-lock I'd be surprised. It is a big heavy motherfucker tho.

You'd be amazed what a cunningly placed trolley/bottle jack will do to a shackle lock. They're also much easier to cut than an equivalently sized chain (cos they tend to stay in the same place).
